“That’ll be $19.50,” said Luke in a tired tone to the customer, flashing her a tired smile. It was late after all, and it’s been a really busy day for him. Considering it’s been a while since the last time he had some proper sleep, he’s been even more tired in that moment that the bags under his eyes became really visible. She handed him a $20 and he gave her the change before saying with another smile, “Thank you, have a lovely day.”
The customer took her bag of CDs and turned around without a word or a smile, making Luke sigh and roll his eyes. He instantly felt bad for rolling his eyes behind someone’s back, but then he suddenly forgot about it and his eyes widened when he saw very faint, dull colours for approximately three seconds. He felt dizzy when it all happened; although, the colours were very dull and you could barely tell there were colours.
When reality hit him, he quickly moved away from behind the cashier-counter and ran outside the store, standing there like a lost puppy as he looked to his left and right to see if anyone was walking.
But no one was there.
He frowned as he walked back inside, his eyes welling up with tears. He was close; he was so close to find his soul mate but she left. It is known that when your soul mate is thirty feet or less away from you, you get to see everything in dull colours.
But why did everything go back to black and white again?
Why did he see things in dull colours for only three seconds?
After sitting behind the counter with his hands in fists and pressed against his lips as he propped himself up by his elbows, Luke concluded: this must mean that his soul mate was between thirty to thirty-one feet away from him.
He shook the thoughts away, checking the time to see that he has five minutes until his shift ends and his co-worker arrives to take his place. His other co-worker, Calum, was checking around the store to make sure everything’s in place and putting the CDs and DVDs back in their place if they weren’t.
Luke was about to head to the backroom and get ready to check out when Calum stopped him, “You alright there, mate?” he asked from where he stood by the Rock section, holding a few CDs in his hands to put them back in their place.
“Um, yeah,” nodded Luke, “yeah, I am. Why wouldn’t I be?” he chuckled dryly before flashing him a faint smile.
“You just—I don’t know, you’ve been so quiet today and I saw you run out of the store earlier. Plus, there are bags under your eyes and you look like crap,” shrugged Calum.
Luke playfully rolled his eyes at the last thing Calum said. “Thanks for your insight,” he said sarcastically before shaking his head. “I’ve just been tired lately. You know, lack of sleep and stuff,” he nodded, flashing him a reassuring smile.
“Right, yeah, okay,” nodded Calum as well, smiling back at him before he turned his attention back to the CDs in his hands.
Luke let out a breath of relief before he quickly headed to the backroom, grabbing his backpack and clocking out considering his other co-worker arrived and his shift just ended.
He walked back out of the room and slightly waved at his two co-workers before leaving the store and getting in his car that his cousin got him as a present when he first got his license about three to two years ago. He turned on the engine and turned on the radio, keeping it on a low volume as he drove back home.
On his way there, he kept thinking about earlier when he saw those dull colours. They weren’t beautiful as everybody said, but they weren’t very bad either. But of course he wouldn’t find them beautiful; they were dull after all, not bright as normal because he didn't have any sort of physical contact with his soul mate.
However, that’s not the case. That’s not what was making him upset. It was the fact that his soul mate was about thirty feet away from him and yet he didn’t meet her. He couldn’t even do anything about it.
He gripped the steering wheel, feeling his eyes well up with tears again. He didn’t want to cry. He couldn’t cry. It was a stupid thing to cry about.
Pulling into the driveway, he took a deep breath and wiped away his tears, not wanting Ashton to see him cry.
Getting out of the car, he took out his keys from his pocket and went to unlock the door but it was already unlocked. He walked in, hearing some gasps and quiet moans, and he let out a shaky sigh, taking off his shoes and dropping his backpack by the door. How come Ashton found his soul mate already and Luke hadn’t? Why him?
He walked into the living room, nonchalantly plopping down on the couch next to his roommate and his boyfriend who were too busy making out to notice Luke until they felt the couch dip next to them. They pulled apart and looked at Luke, both of them giving him worried looks.
“You alright?” asked Harry, Ashton’s boyfriend, or soul mate.
Luke nodded, grabbing the remote and turning on the TV.
“You sure?” Ashton raised an eyebrow. “You usually tease us or make gagging sounds whenever you walk into us making out. You’re not doing that right now. You’re all frown-y and your face is red an—were you crying?”
Just when Ashton asked him the last question, Luke felt his eyes fill with tears for the third time that day. He hates it when someone asks him if he’s okay when he’s not, or if he was crying when he actually was.
“I just…” Luke took a deep breath to even out his breaths and calm down, a tear falling and he quickly wiped it away. “My soul mate was thirty feet away from me today,” he blurted out.
“Wha—holy shit, what colour is this?” Ashton held out Harry’s hand in front of Luke’s face, pointing at the nail polish.
“I don—what the fuck, why are you wearing nail polish?”
Harry blushed, snatching his hand back and glaring at his boyfriend. “He thought it’d be fun and ‘cute’.”
“Come on, it is cute,” pouted Ashton.
Harry shook his head, looking back at Luke. “You were saying?”
“Everything’s in black and white,” he bit his lip, “nothing’s in colours.”
“Then how did you know that your soul mate was thirty feet away from you?” asked Ashton with furrowed eyebrows.
“Because she was!” snapped Luke in desperation. “She was thirty-one or thirty feet away from me, an-and things were in dull colours for no longer than five seconds and then—poof—it’s gone!” he shouted in a shaky voice, tears rolling down his cheeks and he furiously wiped them away. “Everything went back to black and white.”
Harry chewed on his lip. “Do you think… do you think your soul mate… died in that moment?”
“W-what?” Luke looked at him. He didn’t think of that. “N-no,” he shook his head, “the colours would’ve stayed. When your soul mate dies, the colours stay. They don’t leave.”
Harry fiddled with his fingers, quietly pointing out, “Only if you had some sort of physical contact.”

my favourite teacher left school and now im sad someone come cuddle me
important things that happened in this chapter that u guys should pay attention to: when soul mates are thirty feet or less away from each other, they both see everything in dull colours; when one of them dies and they both never had any sort of physical contact (even if it was just a faint touch), the one that's alive sees everything in black and white again, which basically means that they never see anything in colours; if they did, however, have some sort of physical contact, the colours stay; when they do have physical contact for the first time, that's when they see everything in normal colours instead of dull ones.
i hope that made sense? if anything is unclear, you can ask me in the comments and i'll try to answer as soon as i can.
