While I was staring at Hogwarts I heard a voice. "First Years! " I followed the voice all the way to the boats on the lake. This is how I assumed we would get to school. I clambered into one of the wooden boats. I looked around for oars, but it seemed as if the boats were magically sailing across the water! It was actually pretty relaxing - sitting on a boat at night. A few minutes later we were out of the boats and standing infront of a huge door. It was unlocked and we went in. This was the moment! A teacher led us into a huge hall and before we even got a proper look he took us behind a wall, before all the older students filed in.

"As some of you know", said the wizard, "you are about to be sorted. For those that don't know, they are four houses here at Hogwarts. You will sit with your house at meals, sleep in dormitories with them, and if you do good work or behave well then you earn house points. Any rule breaking loses you points. At the end of the year the house with the most points wins the house cup, a very special acheivment. The four houses are Gryffindor, a house for the brave and chivalrous, Hufflepuff, a house for the kind and hard working, Ravenclaw, a house for the intelligent and witty, and Slytherin, a house for the ambitious and cunning. In a minute, you will place the Sorting Hat on your head and it will sort you into your house, then you should go and sit with your house before the Start Of Term Feast. OK first years, in you go to the Great Hall!"

I didn't really know what house I was going to be in - the only one I really didn't want to be in was in Slytherin. I knew that Slytherin had a bad reputation and it often produced dark wizards. Other than that I didn't really mind which house I was in. Hopefully I could be in a house different from Tom.

My thought was cut short when the professor led us into the Great Hall. I could see why it was called the Great Hall, because it was, well, Great. There were four tables, one for each house, and a table for the teachers. The ceiling was really cool, it reflected the weather and it didn't even seem like there was a ceiling at all. We were led up to a stool and were told to form a line. The professor held up a long piece of parchment and read out the first name on it: Adams, Marcus. Marcus came up and sat on the stool, putting the dusty hat on his head. After about 30 seconds the hat shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Marcus walked over to join them. The list went on, through B, C, D, E and F, then the moment came. "Gaunt, Violet". I gulped, then went up to sit on the stool.

The hat was placed onto my head by the professor. As soon as it was on it spoke, to my surprise. "Hmm, a Gaunt. I Haven't had to sort one of you for a while. Your family are descendants of Salazar Slytherin himself - you even speak a bit of parseltongue..." Oh dear. I knew where this was going: the exact way I didn't want this to go. But then the hat seemed to change its mind. "But you don't have the personality of a Slytherin, no, definitley not. You are brave, but you don't have the bravery of a Gryffindor. You could be a Hufflepuff, you really could, but you love reading, you have a thirst for knowledge... better be RAVENCLAW!" I smiled - I was pretty happy about this! I walked over to the cheering Ravenclaws and really felt like I belonged.

The sorting went on and I didn't know most of the people until it got to "Riddle, Tom". He walked up, with an indifferent look on his face and barely a second after the hat was placed on his head, it screamed "SLYTHERIN!" What a surprise. Tom walked over there and sat alone, as though he was trying to not be noticed. After Tom it was "Robins, Liza" - my new friend. Eventually, the sorting hat said "RAVENCLAW!" Liza came over and sat next to me. Some more people were sorted. Mary was the last, and she, luckily, was a Ravenclaw and sat with us.

It was over now. After a short speech from Professor Dippett, the headmaster, we could start the feast. Many golden plates appeared on the table, filled with every food you could think of - I realised how hungry I was. I ate my meal, coming back for seconds and even thirds, until I couldn't eat any more. It was getting late by then, so a girl with a prefect badge on her robes led us all up to Ravenclaw Tower. There was a door up there with an eagle knocker. The knocker started to talk and asked "I'm tall when I'm young and short when I'm old - what am I?" The girl answered "A candle", and the door opened to such a beautiful room. There were comfy blue velvet sofas and chairs, and a statue of a woman with what looked like a tiara on her head. There was a diamond chandelier on the ceiling and many silver coloured astronomy charts on the walls, and finally, there were so many books - it looked like there were even more then at Flourish and Blotts!

We were then led up to our dormitories. I shared mine with Liza, Mary and two other girls. I sat down on my bed, which was SO comfy, and before I even knew it I fell asleep.
