tension

mikasa could feel herself tense up as she entered the doors of the restaurant. she clocked in and quietly began her shift.

so far, there was no sign of jean or eren. it was a moment of relief — the silence before the storm, she thought. she hoped the boys would behave, but anxiousness filled her body.

jean was angry and hurt, understandably. her feelings were mixed up about the situation. she felt guilty for jean— she truly did care for him, but her feelings for eren overpowered everything else.

mikasa knew jean was very non-confrontational. he didn't like to fight, and he rarely stood up for himself. she knew he would not cause any problems during their shift.

eren, on the other hand, was different. he was never afraid to speak his mind, even if it meant arguing or having a bad attitude. he was jealous and tender over the jean situation. it was a perfect brew for disaster.

disaster she was not willing to lose her job over.

mikasa loved her job. she was almost always respected, besides the occasional rude customer she crossed. the pay was cheap, but it was made up for in tips. she was very welcoming and was liked among the people who came inside to eat. eren and mikasa had gotten the job together when they were seventeen. jean and their other close friend, armin, joined them not too long after. now, two years later, they decided to continue to work their part-time job to assist in paying for their schooling.

she was expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. luckily, eren was not around jean often. they were not normally able to have a conversation during their shift— but eren could look through the window at any point and see jean attemtping to speak to mikasa. that would be a problem for the jealous boy.

though, mikasa did not expect jean to try to speak to her. she understood his hurt and planned to stay away from him as much as possible. it would be in all three of their best interests— avoiding confrontation is the key to a calm evening.

mikasa ran a damp rag along a table, humming to herself quietly. minutes earlier, eren entered the building, giving her a gentle smile and beginning his shift as a cook. it was a dull night, not very busy at all. usually, all tables were occupied and reservations were full. tonight, only a few customers were sitting inside. it felt unnatural.

she had a very strange feeling.

the door opened, sounding a bell. mikasa glanced towards it as she took a customer's order, scribbling it into her notepad.

jean walked inside. the two made eye contact for a brief moment before he hurriedly rushed behind the counter. she sighed, watching his cheeks glow red and his hair fall in front of his face.

"thank you so much, i'll bring your order out as soon as it is ready. would you like a refill on your soda?" she spoke to the customer.

the short elderly woman smiled, nodding. "oh, yes. thank you dear."

mikasa grinned at her and walked away, passing jean into the kitchen. she thought of all the things she could say to him— all of the ways she could apologize.

she didn't want him to hate her.

as she filled a cup, she felt a gentle poke on her shoulder. she turned, facing eren.

"why are you frowning? is everything okay?" he asked her, leaning against the wall.

she shrugged, taking a deep breath.

"everything is fine," she responded, glancing out the kitchen window at jean, who was sitting peacefully.

eren glared at jean, nodding at her as he walked away.
