A Memory

Me and Justice walked out of Algebra 2, chatting about prom next month.

"Oliver is taking me to prom," Justice said. I could almost see the red hearts in her eyes. Of course, she could find a boyfriend in only 6 months of living here. With her blonde hair and crystal blue eyes, she was practically irresistible. Luckily, she was nice as she was beautiful. Erm, somewhat nice.

"Obnoxious Oliver?" I chuckled.

"He's not obnoxious, twit!" she snapped. "You are all just sensitive." We walked to our lockers, which were right next to each other.

"I'm just saying Jus, be careful, he's a freak," I warned her. She rolled her eyes. "We should go shopping in Staten Island today. It's only about 20 minutes away."

I didn't really like shopping. Sweats and jeans always seem to do the trick.

I shrugged. "Sure, but you're driving."

"Great. Meet me at my place after school at 5." She slammed her locker door. "I'll catch up with you next period. Later Kate." I waved.

I grabbed my biology books and closed my locker. That's when he stood behind.

"Want to go to prom with me?" Brendon asked.

I almost fainted. "P-prom?" I stammered like an idiot. "Oh, y-yes. Absolutely!" Brendon seemed to shift his gaze towards me, that's when I noticed he wasn't looking at me at all. He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. I turned around to see Ester Cooper, one of the hottest girls in school. She devilishly grinned at me, then looked at Brendon. "Of course, Brendon."

Of course, why would he go out with a middle-class girl like me?

"Sorry," he paused. Tears began to well up in my eyes.

"Kaitlyn," I spoke. "I've been in your class for 6 years." Suddenly, the lights began to flicker above us. But I didn't really care. I was still upset about Brendon playing me.

Brendon cringed. "Yeah, really sorry about that. Maybe we can just be friends?" I scoffed and turned to Ester. "Enjoy your date." I stomped away through the hallway.

"What's the point of wearing an expensive dress if you don't even have a date?" I asked Justice. She surveyed the mist gray dress with sparkles around the bust. It was beautiful and expensive. Just like everything in Lord & Taylor.

"Is it a crime to look fashionable? You need to look cute for the prom." She turned her nose up at it. "This is what you people call expensive?"

"Prom is next month, Justice. Since when is a $199 dress not expensive? And what do you mean by you people?"

"Americans. Obviously." She laughed. "Can't you afford this?" I never liked to brag because it annoyed me when others did. But I definitely could. My dad was considered a B-List Actor and an author. Though he has one show, it is a big hit. He's only been in one show and a couple of different short films. And my mother was an NIT, Nurse in Training.

"I have to call my dad and ask. I'm not allowed to just buy things without his permission."

"Well, what you waiting for? Call him, eh?" I always chuckled when she said Eh. It won't ever get old. After I called my dad, he allowed me to buy the dress. Later, Justice recommended that we go Times Square to shop for shoes.

"Times Square?" I asked surprised.

"Yeah? Why not? Is there something wrong?"

"No. It's just—never mind, we can go."

"Kate, if you don't feel comfortable going, we can always just stay here."

"No, no. It's fine. I'm not trying to ruin your time in New York. Let's go."

She shrugged and we walked towards Times Square. It gave me a butterfly's being here again.

3 years ago, when I was in Times Square with my parents. I still wasn't completely sure what happened. But all I remember was feeling this jolt of energy course through my body excitedly. I ignored it and had mistaken it for excitement. While my parents looked inside of a jewelry store, I wandered off bored. I looked at all the huge screens advertising something different. One mega billboard was arm's length, about 4 feet away from me. I looked up smiling and reached out to touch it. This part was shaky. But as soon as my finger touched it, a small spark appeared, and I jumped back and shrieked.

The entire billboard shut off.

Suddenly, one by one, each and every mega screen turned black. Screams filled the air and I looked around in horror.

Another attack? My parents rushed outside to see the cause of the commotion. My mother grabbed my wrist, and we power walked back to the car. I turned around to see everyone staring up at the disabled screens in confusion.

It must've been a glitch. It couldn't have been me. That wouldn't make any sense. Right?
