Colours AU
MIST:
Hazel liked the zoo, she didn't know why all she knew is that it calmed her
Whether it was because she found the animals calming or because Hazel could relate to the animals, they were just looking for something, a better life than the ones they were often born into because they were often hunted down to the brink of extinction
One thing that Hazel learnt in her thirteen years of life was that humans could and would be cruel. Crueller than any animal she had met at the zoo. Often animals were just misunderstood and they had no way of actually communicating to humans why they were the way they were whereas humans had the luxury of stringing together words and words could make a sentence and sentences were a way of communicating how you felt
Even if humans couldn't speak there were at least a hundred other ways to get past the barrier of language or language difficulties, the point was that Hazel felt she could sympathise with the animals better than she could with a human
You wouldn't know it just by looking at her because there were flecks of fire in her eyes, that seemed to burn into her gut and fuel her but the girl had also seen pain. Pain that no one should go through let alone someone her age, but Hazel tried not to let it define her as she walked around the zoo, admiring every animal insight
Calmness set in her gut as she walked around. This was the only place she felt calm, where the rage and darkness boiling in her mind can't touch her. This is where she felt safe, and where she loved to hang out wherever she had three times -- which was pretty much all the time
On her way to the bird houses, she bumped into someone and she stumbled back before looking up at that person. Words dying in her throat when she came face to face with the person, he looked like he would never hurt a fly and he looked even more adorable when a blush filled his cheeks although Hazel didn't know the colour, she assumed it would be an adorable red colour that faded to pink over time and if he got embarrassed it would go back to being a bright shade of red!
Hell! She could feel her cheeks getting warmer just thinking about it
Why was she even thinking about this? She has had never had an interest in finding her soulmate. Sure it would've been nice that would understand her and love her unconditionally through all her faults, but she was only thirteen she had time to think about this stuff, she had the rest of her life ahead of her
"I'm sorry!" He stammered, cheeks going a darker shade "I wasn't looking--"
"It's okay, no harm done. I'm not even hurt"
"Still I'm sorry, I don't know what I'd do if I actually hurt you"
Now it was Hazel's turn to blush, her cheeks going a bright red as she looks at the boy, who looked to only be a few years older than herself, he was adorable and after a minute she realised she still hadn't said anything and quickly muttered out an "It's okay, see? I wasn't even hurt"
Although the second time she said that seemed to calm his nerves, he still looked embarrassed and tried to apologise again as he offered an explanation "It's my first week on the job, so I'm still trying to get a hang of the layout of this place"
"Ah, I thought I didn't recognise you"
The boy frowned as if he didn't understand why Hazel had said what she said and honestly the dark-skinned girl didn't blame him and so she explained a little more "Sorry I didn't mean for it to sound rude, I just mean I come here a lot and I know a lot about this place and the people that work here and I haven't seen you"
"And here I thought I didn't make a good impression"
"I don't know how you could think that"
The boy blushed again, ducking his head slightly before meeting her eyes again, a shy look in his eyes as he sticks his hand out for Hazel to shake, which she takes slightly hesitant not because she was nervous "I'm Frank"
"Hazel" She replied with a kind smile
When they pulled away colour started to shine through both of their eyes it was dull at first but eventually, it got brighter. The two teenagers gasped not knowing how to react to seeing things in colour for the first time ever
Frank gasped, the world was so bright he could see every colour, hue and shade that the world had to offer now. Every colour seemed to bleed into one another and it was marvellous but also terrifying at the same time. How could he have a soulmate?
He couldn't believe he had a soulmate and best of all it was this beautiful girl in front of him with the golden flecks in her eyes, judging by the way she stood though she didn't believe she had much confidence -- or any at all really, but Frank could see different, he could see the fire that burned behind the golden flecks in her eyes and the way it seemed to turn her eyes to molten
Frank barely knew more about this girl than a name and her obvious quiet beauty but he had already shown her more kindness and compassion in that short conversation she had with him than he had seen in a long time after all death seemed to be following Frank Zhang like a shadow, first taking his father Mars when he was just a baby and then back a few years later to take his mother, who had been proud to serve for her country
All of that left him in the care of his grandmother
And cruelty seemed to be death's shadow, tainting every word that came out of his grandmother's mouth with words of poision and it left Frank feeling low about himself but maybe this girl could change that
Maybe, just maybe, they could fix each other's scars.
