Chapter 6

Kurapika and Leorio arrive at the hospital.

"Akemi mentioned something about her dad being transferred to the I.C.U." Leorio says to Kurapika.
"Right. I'll call her to see if she is here." Kurapika says while dialing Akemi's number.

She didn't answer Kurapika's call. They stood outside the hospital thinking about what they should do. Minutes later they hear Akemi shouting happily.
"Kurapika! Are you feeling better?" she asks while hugging Kurapika.
"Um, yes." he says, not hugging her back.
"I missed you so much! I was so worried. Leorio took great care of you!" she says.

Leorio rolled his eyes. Kurapika just stares at nothing, expressionless.
"Yes, I am in debt to him," says Kurapika.
"Unfortunately, my dad is back in the I.C.U." she says.
"Right, I heard. I thought he was improving." Kurapika says.
"Yeah, well Dr. Ikeda says these things happen. He is taking such good care of him!" Akemi explains.

Leorio is furious.

"If he is getting such great care then why the hell is he back in intensive care?" shouts Leorio.
"Leorio? Why are you shouting at me?" Akemi asks, surprised.
"Because you came to see Kurapika only one time! He was very ill!" explains Leorio.
"I came twice and my father needed me too, Leorio!" Akemi says to Leorio.
"I just don't get it. I might only be a medical student, but none of what your precious doctor said made any sense!" says Leorio.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Akemi asked, angrily.
"Something is going on." says Leorio.
"Well, forget you. Kurapika and I are going up to see my dad. Come on, Kurapika." she says to Leorio while grabbing Kurapika's arm.
"Right. Leorio, I'll be back." says Kurapika, nodding to Leorio.
"Fine." replies Leorio, looking away from them.

Kurapika and Akemi walk into her father's room. Dr. Ikeda is there, giving a nurse orders. The nurse leaves.

"Oh, hi! Kurapika, right?" Dr. Ikeda asks.
"Right." Kurapika answers.
"Glad to see you are feeling better." says Dr. Ikeda.
"Yes, thank you." Kurapika replies.
"It's unfortunate that our hunter over here isn't doing so well." Dr. Ikeda says while adjusting an I.V. pump.

Kurapika senses a strange aura coming from where Dr. Ikeda is standing.

"What the hell is going on here? Is he using nen on that pump?" Kurapika asks himself while using gyo in his eyes.

"What are you adjusting over there?" demands Kurapika.
"Oh, just his sedative." Dr. Ikeda answers with a smile.
"Kurapika, what is your tone?" asks Akemi.

Kurapika sees that the doctor is, in fact, using nen. He also thinks about what Melody had said to Leorio about a connection between Akemi and Dr. Ikeda.

"Answer me!" demands Kurapika.

They both look at him, surprised.

"Is there something going on between the two of you?" Kurapika asks.
"Kurapika, what are you talking about?" Akemi asks.
"The fact that you asked me a question as a response proves to me that you are hiding something." says Kurapika.

Kurapika places his right arm in front of him and lifts his index finger, dropping his dowsing chain. He walks toward Akemi.

"I'll ask again. Is there a connection between the two of you that is not strictly professional?" he asks Akemi.
"Of course not." she answers.

The little ball at the end of Kurapika's dowsing chain begins to move. Kurapika asked Dr. Ikeda the same question.

"It's a professional relationship." Dr. Ikeda answers.

The dowsing chain moved for him too.

Kurapika looks down. He is hurt. Kurapika knows what pain feels like, however, this pain feels different. It feels like his heart is being squeezed. His stomach also begins to ache. He is nauseous. The squeezing sensation in his heart feels like it is getting tighter with each beat. Tears start to run down Kurapika's face. He makes a fist with his left hand.

"Kurapika? What's wrong?" Akemi asks, walking towards Kurapika.
"Please. I need to sit down." answers Kurapika while sitting down on a chair.
"What was that about?" Dr. Ikeda asks.

Kurapika stands up, angrily.

"It's about the fact that you two are lying to me!" shouts Kurapika.
"Oh, and what gave it away? Don't tell me it was your little chain." says Dr. Ikeda.
"Answer me this. Are you a nen user?" Kurapika asked Dr. Ikeda.
