Adam POV

"Alright, any dinner requests?" asked Kyle as I parked the car in the driveway to Y/N's house.

"Hmm, no not really. I'm too tired to think about it right now. It's probably best if I lie down for a bit first." replied Y/N tiredly.

"Good idea. There's still time." he replied.

"Can one of you please help me get out of the car?" asked Y/N.

"Sure. Come on mommy. Let's get you inside so you can rest." I said as I walked around the car and took her hands in mine to carefully help her out of the car.

"Whew... thanks." she thanked me and started to head towards the front door.

Just as me and Kyle were taking our bags out of the trunk, we suddenly heard a shriek and a thud.

"Oh damn!" cursed Y/N.

"Y/N! What happened?" asked Kyle upset as we both saw Y/N lying on the steps in front of the house.

"I tripped on the stairs. No surprise, because I can't see my feet anymore." she grunted.

Immediately we were at her side helping her back to her feet. Y/N was shaking like crazy and her breathing was labored.

"Are you all right? Did you hurt yourself?" I immediately wanted to know.

"I don't think so. Just a little shaken up." she replied in a trembling voice.

"Are you sure?" l asked and she nodded.

"Okay, take my hand." said Kyle.

He helped her up the steps, but after just a few steps Y/N stopped.

"Ow..." she whined, holding her bump.

"What's wrong?" asked Kyle immediately, and we both looked at her worriedly.

"I... I think we need to go to the hospital. I think... I think I'm bleeding." she replied, looking down at herself.

We followed her gaze and were shocked to see blood soaking through the fabric of her dress and running down her legs.

"Oh my God..." I whispered.

Quickly, both Kyle and I grabbed Y/N's hands and led her back to the car as quickly as we could, but also as gently as we could.

Y/N was pale as a ghost and grimaced in pain. I knew she was trying not to let on how bad it was. But for me, one look at her face was enough.

Kyle got behind the wheel and drove us to the hospital as fast as he could, while I sat in the back seat with Y/N. She was leaning close to me, her legs resting on the seat upholstery. I could feel how hard she was shaking. The hand I was holding was wet with cold sweat and her breathing was rapid and uneven.

"Deep breaths, sweetie. We'll be right there. Nothing is going to happen to you guys," I tried to reassure her.

"Something is... wrong. I am... so dizzy. I feel so... weird. If something... happens, the names for the kids are saved on my phone. I... You have to promise me... you'll take good care of the little ones. I'm not that important. Take care of the twins... first." Y/N demanded with a groan and squeezed my hand as hard as she could.

"Don't talk like that, Y/N. Nothing is going to happen to you. Nothing is happening to anyone today." I replied.

"Adam... Kyle... promise me. I know..." then suddenly I felt her collapse and her head tilt forward.

"Kyle, she's passed out. Hurry!" I yelled in a panic.

After endless minutes, we finally arrived at the hospital. Kyle jumped out of the car and went for help. Immediately doctors and nurses came running with a stretcher.

Everything that happened next seemed like a movie playing in my head, not like it was actually happening. Words like placenta detachment, blood loss, emergency cesarean section echoed through our minds as we followed the doctors.

"Gentlemen, you are not allowed in there! We will keep you informed. Please sit down." one of the nurses said to us as we tried to go into the exam room as well.

We could do nothing but sit in the waiting room and inactively wait for news. Minutes passed and felt like hours. Half an hour after we arrived, a nurse approached us and asked us to accompany her.

She went ahead to a room and then asked us to wait there. Shortly after, Doctor Lynn, Y/N gynecologist, came into the room.

"Mr. O'Reilly, Mr. Cole. In Miss L/N's uterus, the placenta of one of the babies has detached due to the fall. This caused a massive hemorrhage, resulting in significant blood loss. We had no choice but to deliver the twins immediately. The blood supply was no longer ensured and thus the life of the little ones was in acute danger. The babies are doing well now.

However, Miss L/N's condition is not stable yet. The shock caused by the blood loss has had a severe effect on her heart. At this point, I cannot say how long it will take my colleagues to give you an update. I'm sorry about that. But I thought you might like to meet your children," she explained.

"Yeah, that's... that's probably a good idea," Kyle stammered. Like me, he was too overwhelmed with information to process it that quickly. Y/n would get through this. She just had to. She promised not to leave us alone with the twins.

All we could do now was stay positive and focus on the little ones. Just as Y/N wanted. There was nothing else we could do for her right now. Powerless, we had to wait for news from the doctors.

Doctor Lynn left the room briefly and then returned with a nurse. They each wheeled in a crib in front of them.

"Please sit down." she requested quietly.

"Here we have the little girl." she said, lifting the little bundle out of the crib and gently placing her in Kyle's arms.

"And here's the little boy!" said Doctor Lynn then as she lifted up the second baby and placed him in my arms.

"We'll leave you alone for a few minutes now. Then we have to take the little ones back to the pediatric ward. Premature babies need to be monitored. We don't expect any complications, though. Thanks to the early application of the medication for lung development, they are both doing well." she explained to us and then left a room.

"Hey little guy. We weren't expecting you guys yet." I whispered to the baby in my arms. My emotions were so all over the place that I didn't know what to do now. Part of me was proud, another part was worried.

I looked to Kyle and his eyes were fixed on the baby as he rocked her gently.

"She looks like Y/N." he whispered.

"Can we switch?" he wanted to know shortly after. I nodded and stood up. Very gently I put the little man on the bed and Kyle handed over the girl. Then he picked the little one up and then we both sat down on the bed next to each other.

"You're right! She does look like Y/N." I breathed in agreement.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but we have to take the twins with us now." we suddenly heard from the doorway. Doctor Lynn was back, but we hadn't heard her at all.

Reluctantly, we put the babies in their cribs and watched as they were wheeled out of the room. And with that, the waiting continued.

An hour passed, then two. The ticking of the clock on the wall seemed to get louder and louder. I was about to rip the stupid thing off the wall and destroy it when the door opened.

"Are you Miss L/N's family?" asked a rather young-looking doctor.

"Yes, we are," I replied.

"My name is Doctor Collins. I am a resident in cardiac surgery. I am here to update you on Miss L/N. I am sorry to inform you that the blood loss and the following shock were too much for Miss L/N's body. We did everything in our power, but she did not make it. Again, I am incredibly sorry," he told us.

And just like that, a world came crashing down. One wrong step and everything you knew changed. Everything was suddenly in pieces.
