The coffee shop was small, but cozy. There were plenty of seats and some tables set up. It was surprisingly quiet for the morning, but that was what Sam loved about it. It was always quiet and relaxing. Or at least it was when they came. Looking over to the side, they watched as Naomi shift her weight from foot to foot. She was fidgeting with the menu in her hands, and it almost looked as if she was sweating. Do I make her that nervous? As the next person in line stepped up to place their order, Sam gently led Naomi forward by placing their hand on the woman's lower back. You don't have to be so tense around me. At least not yet. Sam thought to themself. Naomi looked up to see two amber eyes looking at her. She immediately looked away. Why are you looking at me like that? Stop it. Gods, your looks could kill. Why did you even bring me out here, Sam? I mean, you could literally land anyone you want. Girl or guy, they would fall head over heels for you.
"Are you alright?" It was a husky voice that asked. Deep and yet oh so attractive. Naomi looked up again to see Sam waiting for an answer. Her voice caught in her throat. When she did speak, it came out small and gentle.
"Yes. I'm fine, just tired." She smiled, but Sam wasn't convinced at all. Fine? Liar. Before the brunette could speak, Naomi cut them off.
"Someone woke me up after a double shift." Although she was speaking dryly, she was smiling up at the fedora-wearing brunette.
"Can't imagine who would wake up such a cutie." Cutie? Did Sam just call me cute? She was about to say something when there was a cough from behind them. They both looked behind them to see an older man holding a newspaper.
"Next in line, please." The man behind the counter called. That brought them back to the present, and they both stepped forward to place their orders. The man smiled brightly at them, but Naomi noticed that he seemed to be smiling more at Sam. Told you could get anyone. She couldn't stand it. Stop smiling like that. Gods, I hate this. She had to admit that the man was rather handsome looking. He had short blue hair that contradicted his brown eyes just perfectly. He had strong cheekbones that didn't exactly help. Nor did his uniform which was one size too small. It hugged all the right places and if Naomi wasn't here with Sam would have been tempted to leave him her number, but when she looked up at the brunette, she couldn't even compare them. Sure, the man looked nice, but there was something about Sam that just drew you in. Sam looked like one of those hometown boys that would pick you up in their pickup truck, only to take you out to a field, so you could look up at the stars from the bed of that very same truck. Only now it would have pillows and bedding in the back. Of course, she had seen Sam cleaned up too, and boy did they clean up. She would have never imagined how they turned up at her door just weeks earlier. Then again, she never would have actually left her number. It had been some time since she had been out on a date, and somehow she didn't think she would have had the courage to do something, so forward. Sam smiled down at her again before she realized that the clerk had asked for her order. She blushed when she realized that they were waiting on her. Naomi looked up to read the man's name tag, which read Rodger. He looks like a Rodger, too.
"Oh! Um- sorry Rodger. I'll just have a black coffee." She smiled and shook her head when she heard her own order. She liked black coffee, but who really went to a coffee shop to just order a black coffee.
"She'll have a Chai Latte." Sam reordered, and she could help but smile; thankful for the help. When Rodger rang it up, she went to take out her card, but stopped when she saw that a black card was already slipped into the card reader. She was flabbergasted.
"You should have let me pay." She protested. Naomi hated it when people paid for her. It was just something her parents taught her. "Everything you have, you work for." She had lived her whole life like that.
