IRUM

Irum is a mineral found only in the soil of the planet Taris. The mineral is highly dangerous and unstable, if manufactured, Irum can create some of the most destructive explosives and weapons in the galaxy.

Irum was used during the fall of the Old Republic, and the mining of the mineral destroyed much of the planet's surface and killed many of Taris's citizens. When Taris joined the Galactic Republic, the senate banned Irum from being extracted and manufactured. The special tools and knowledge of how to extract Irum and manufacture it were also banned. Before the Galactic Republic fell, there had been only one incident of Irum being extracted and manufactured and it was during the reign of Queen Adenna Daulton. A group of insurrectionists created Irum bombs to make a statement against the queen's decision to marry a Mandalorian (tensions between the outer rim and Mandalore had been strained due to the fall of the Old Republic that had occurred just a few decades before). This incident nearly caused the destruction of the capital, but they were stopped before true damage had been done.

During the reign of the Empire, the use of Irum was made legal, and it was once again used to make weapons. The destruction it caused Taris was ten times as horrific as during the fall of the Old Republic. When the Emperor was killed and the Empire began to crumble, King Jayce Kenobi Daulton forbid further use of Irum. When the New Republic was officially created, the king's order was put into official law.

Irum can only be extracted by a tool called a Saskia Drill, named after Aramis Saskia, the man who created the drill. Irum is unstable from the moment it is extracted from the ground. The mineral must be placed in a pressurized container made of Beskar (the only material that can withstand an Irum blast) within ten minutes of extraction, or else it will explode. Once Irum is pressurized, it is processed into powder, just like a regular bomb. Once Irum is made into weapon form, it can be deactivated by plasma charges. However, no plasma charge will work on raw Irum.
