Chapter Two- Hospital Girl (Day One)

I attempted to dry my hair in my seat, ignoring the stares of the strangers around me walking in and out of the living room, "Uh, so you said we'd talk?"

Heather nodded, "I have to tend to some things still but Ethan can settle you in and explain how things work around here". She gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder and then went downstairs to who knows where.

I ran my hands through my hair, sitting there awkwardly before Ethan exited from one of the rooms on the main floor.

"Sorry for the wait, I was giving our elders some of the medicine we managed to snag haha, " He grinned, his tone playful. I finally had time to give him a good look. He was tall, he had to duck to avoid hitting the door frame. He had a strong build, he definitely played football in high school. He seemed too optimistic despite the situation, and somehow he managed to still keep his brown hair, a tad darker than Heather's, trimmed. His dark brown eyes met mine, "We didn't just go to the hospital for surviors. We were looking for medicine and supplies too, so we're not total idiots haha."

I nodded, "The medicine and supplies part makes sense but you have elders? That seems like an awful lot of work during a..you know..apocalypse?" Despite my confusion, I felt relieved. These people were kind.

Ethan laughed sheepishly, "I know, not really a pro survival tactic, right?" I gave him a half laugh as he continued more serious now, "They were just left there. Like they didn't matter. I couldn't leave them I just couldn't. Heather wouldn't either."

The dissapointment I felt at the mention of Heather surprised me, "Heather. That's your girlfriend right?" His laugh startled me,

"My sister. I'm surprised the matching brown hair didn't give that away...Or my flirting with you. "

"Excuse me?" I couldn't have heard him right. He said it so calmly, he didn't seem like the bold type. But then again he did run into an infested hospital for medicine for old people.

"Yeah and you shot me down every time,"Ethan laughed, his ears a shade of red now.

Was I that oblivious? Regardless who could blame me, "Forgive me for not noticing your flirting during a zombie apocalypse. I can't really say romance is a priority right now," I raised an eyebrows at him letting my damp hair fall to one side.

His eyes widened, "that's not what I meant." He frantically tried to explain before settling into a smile, "Okay maybe I'm a little self involved huh?"

"Just a little" I joked pinching my fingers together to demonstrate.

"We can talk more about the place and I'd love to show you around later, but I have another run to do. The group needs gas, ammo, food, you know, all that."

"Okay let's go," I sighed heaving myself up.

Ethan gave me a surprised look, "What? You're going too? You just got here?"

"I've seen enough movies to know I have to pull my own weight to prove myself or whatever," I explained before laughing. I said it jokingly but it was partially the truth. These people seemed kind and trusting but I just met them. Who knows how quickly they would turn me away if I didn't prove that they needed me just as much as I needed them.

"Theres really no need but I won't refuse company. Zack is probably in the car right now anyways."

I followed Ethan to the garage where who I assumed was Zack was tearing off ductape he held in his mouth. He placed the final peice onto the area that was missing the car door and finished the roll of ducttape, "There, it's not the best solution, but we only have two cars and I'm sure the zombies are going to prefer the one with the missing door."
