Chapter Five: Says he's an old soul (Day Two)
Taps on my door woke me up. It instantly reminded me of the taps of that crazy man at the gas station. I screamed when the door opened. It was just Heather.
She gave me a sympathetic look, "You poor thing. Yesterday must have traumatized you. You're okay, dear."
How could she even try to comfort me when her eyes were still red and swollen from the lost of both her boyfriend and her bother. Her nose was still runny from crying. She lost almost all the people she loved less than 24 hours ago, not that there was very many to begin with, yet, here she is trying to comfort me, runny nose and all. The gesture instantly reminded me of Ethan, how he tried to make me feel better after he was bit. "We have a run today, just you and me. Luckily the group still has the other car, it's missing a window but it has all of its doors," she forced a laugh but her eyes gave away how much it was killing her to be here instead of curled up in bed sobbing.
I nodded, I was still dressed in yesterday's clothes, I hadn't noticed the dried blood on my shirt. Guns are messy. I couldn't tell if it was Ethan's or Zach's or both. It was probably both. "I'm ready to go."
Heather nodded. If she noticed the blood on my shirt she didn't mention it, "I'll drive, let's go"

The garage was now much more empty, missing the other car. I hadn't seen the second car up until now. The remaining car was black. It was in much better condition compared to the one that was probably left on the highway, less rust and it had all four doors. It was simply missing a window but that was nothing.I hopped into the passenger seat while Heather tossed our bags in thr backseat. It wasn't long before we were headed back to the gas station. Heather seemed to take comfort in pressing onto the gas, until we were going a good 80 miles an hour. Besides the roar of the car against the road, the drive was silent until Heather finally broke it, "What were his last words, Josephina? What did Zach say?" She asked quietly.
Shoot. What was I supposed to say, that they were 'Take the girl. Take her.' I would have to explain the context to that. I took a look at my hands, my nails were still decent for an apocalypse, "Uh, his last words? Um they were, Tell my family I love them." It was such an obvious lie, that's what they say in every movie and in every book. But Heather smiled. You believe anything when you want to believe it I suppose. Or maybe I'm just becoming a better liar.
"That's nice. Thank you, Jos. We're almost there."
I simply nodded trying to avoid any more questions about Zach and Ethan. Surprisingly she didn't ask for Ethan's last words. Maybe that would've hurt too much, the death of her brother. Or maybe Zach's false last words were enough for the both of them.
We finally arrive at the gas station. The door was already open thanks to Ethan. Another pang at my heart. Heather reached around for our bags before she then offered me a gun. I shook my head and pulled out the one Luke gave me from my bag, "I have one. Uh I got it from the gas station. I found it. " I overexplained but Heather wasn't paying much attention. She wasn't searching for lies in my words.
We both loaded our guns and stepped out of the car. "The place must be overflowing with Zombies with the door open like that."
"Yeah, let's stay together and stay quiet." I responded. I heard footsteps behind me and shrieked. It was nothing I hadn't seen before, another undead, but I still wasn't used to it. Heather wasted no time in beheading it with a single blow,
"So much for staying quiet."
I snorted in response before letting Heather take the lead because last time I took charge people died. We silently made our way inside. I was surprised to see a zombie dead over the body of the crazy man Zach killed. A second zombie if you counted the one that the crazy man had killed himself.
