I touched up my lip gloss just a little bit before seven. I knew it wouldn’t take me long to get to Berns.

“I am really shocked Anna.” Madison called out from the living room.

“Why’s that?”

“I thought after what happened a few weeks ago that you were done with Andy.” I leaned out of the bathroom and shot her a glance down the hallway. “I mean I didn’t think you guys would be going out on dates or anything.” She clarified.

“It’s not a date.” I stated looking at myself in the mirror.

“Then why are you wearing lip gloss?” She now stood in the doorway of the bathroom. She looked at me through the mirror to see my reaction.

“My lips are chapped.” I thought of the first lie I could.

“Okay how about for the more obvious reason that you are wearing your “please fuck me dress”.” I craned my head to look at her, shooting her a glare.

“How did this dress end up with that nick name?”

“Oh please honey, that dress leaves very little to the imagination.”

Tis true. I had picked a poor dress for this outing. It was a black bodycon with spaghetti straps. This was a bad choice.

“You’re right. I should change real quickly.”

“Well it depends.” She sang following me into the bedroom. “What are message are you trying to get across here?”

“That I can be civil.” I playfully threw the dress at her.

“You have like no shame woman.” She shook her head at me.

I quickly shuffled through my closet for something more appropriate to wear.

“What about this?” Madison held up probably the second sluttiest thing in my wardrobe, a white lacy negligee that I for some reason bought but never got the guts to wear.

“You’re funny.” I narrowed my eyes at her.

“You look beautiful.” He smiled as I walked into the restaurant lobby. I blushed wondering what he might have said had I kept the black dress on.

“Thank you.” I smiled back. I had chosen to wear a more formal dress. It was a beige body-wrap style dress that hung down by my knees. It was snug enough to show more than I was really comfortable but it wasn’t as revealing.

“I am honestly really surprised you agreed to come.” He stated as we sat down at the table.

“So am I.” I didn’t mean to say it out loud. My filter must really be broken. I didn’t want to start this night out on a bad note. He looked unaffected by my statement so I assumed he was going to let it go.

“Just so I am aware, are we keeping Alanna an off topic conversation for tonight?” He looked nervous and anxious all in the same.

“I don’t think that talking about her is a good way to start off this conversation. It will only get us into a fight.” I said honestly.

He looked disappointed by my answer but he had to expect as such. He didn’t think I was just going to show up with a total change of heart, did he?

“How was your day?” He asked without any sarcasm. He was honestly going to give this a try.

“I spent half of it in court so I guess it could have been better.” He glared at me. I was being passive aggressive here and I knew it. I had to stop my mouth before this night just went seriously downhill. “It could have been a lot worse though.” I added for an up note.
