Thank you all so much!!
"You have to go. It's just for the weekend." I told Derek for about the hundredth time since this morning.
This was a normal fight. Derek never wanted to visit his father. Normally Greg would have picked him up from school on Friday but Greg had made some plans for tonight with Derek. Greg normally does plan to do nice things with Derek. Like camping trips or amusement park days. He really tries but Derek sees it as nothing more than an emotional ploy to gain his love. Sometimes I think Derek is right. Other time I can really see how much it hurts Greg. I am always caught in the middle between these two.
"I just don't see why I have to. Aren't I old enough to decide if I want to go or not?" He pleaded.
"No, you're not. Derek, please, your father doesn't ask to see you all the time because he knows how you feel. Don't you think that's hard on him?"
"I don't care." He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. Oh god give my strength not to beat my child.
"Well maybe you should. Atleast your dad tries. Most kids don't have that."
"Like Alanna."
"Yes, like Alanna." I swallowed hard. I wasn't ready to let him know that Andy was in fact trying or the fact he hadn't even known about her. There were a lot of secrets I was keeping.
The doorbell rings.
"Go get your bag. Your father's here."
"Fine!" I yelled stomping down the hallway.
Just one day god. Just one. I looked towards the ceiling for the strength to now deal with Greg.
"Hi Greg." I tried to smile pleasantly.
"Hi." To my surprise he actually smiled back. "Where's Derek?"
"Hiding in his room until you yell at him." I tried not to smirk but it proved to be too hard.
"He is becoming a pain in the ass."
"He's a preteen. What do you expect?" I laughed.
"So what are your plans for the weekend?" I walked back towards the kitchen, I was cooking dinner.
"We are having dinner at my parents tonight and spending the weekend in Coral Gables."
"Sounds exciting. I am sure he will come around." I was attempting to just have some polite conversation till he left and not bring up our fight this afternoon. Nothing pleasant ever comes when we start fighting. I wanted Derek to have a good time and I knew if I pissed Greg off, he wouldn't.
"What are you cooking?" I felt his presence behind me. He was over my shoulder. His hands gently grabbed my sides and he leaned in closer to me.
"Jambalaya." His presence made me uncomfortable. We hadn't been in this close of proximity of each other since the day he choked me out. Those memories still caused me nightmares some times.
