I was hanging out with the Baku squad. We were just sitting around not really doing much. Mina was making Tik Toks and the rest of us were either watching her or looking at our phones.
"Ketly! Come do this one with me!"
"Which one?"
I got up and walked over to Mina. She showed me a dance with two people. I guess it was the "here comes Santa Clause" trend. I agreed to do it with her and we watched a few instruction videos to learn the dance.
Kirishima looked up from his phone and saw the dance we were doing.
"Hey that looks kinda fun! Can Bakugo and I learn too?"
Mina got super excited and eagerly let them join. Kiri stood up and dragged Bakugo along with him. They came over and learned both parts of the dance and then Mina suggested we put it all together.
"I'll be with Kiri, and you and Bakugo can be together."
I shrugged and said, "alright," then glanced at Bakugo. He was already looking at me but clicked his tongue before turning away.
"Aww Baku, is that a little blush on your face I see?" I teased.
"What the hell are you talking about! I'm not blushing! Let's just get this stupid dance over with."
I smirked before getting into position. Mina started the recording and we started dancing.
Once that was done I immediately went over to the phone to watch it back with Mina. We were all dancing really well but then came the part where Mina and I had to bend over slightly and shake our butts really close in front of the guys. Kirishima was fine, but Bakugo paused for the smallest second and then turned bright red before clumsily doing the rest of the dance.
I turned around with a sly smirk plastered across my face.
Bakugo was standing off to the side looking grumpy while he tried to get his face to go back to normal.
"So you were blushing, explosion boy. That's cute."
"Hey who are you calling cute! You're cute! I mean...Shut up!"
My cheeks turned slightly pink at what he said. I have never heard Katsuki truly compliment someone before, let alone me. I thought he hated me. Always yelling. I get my revenge by being snarky with him.
He stomped away, probably to go blow something up. I turned back to Mina and Kirishima.
"Well that was weird."
"Girl he totally likes you! You're just going to brush that off?"
"Mina, since we're amateur heros, I get compliments like that all the time. No one ever means it anyway. Why would it be any different with Bakugo?"
A sad look crossed my friends faces as they looked at me. We're already in our third year. Everyone in my class has been in a relationship at least once except for me. Guys have tried but since I can read their minds I know they just want me for my body. I tell my friends every time and the guy I was talking to never speaks a word to me ever again. My friends think they're being sneaky but I know they give the guys talking to's.
I want to be with someone but nobody wants me for me. The nerdy girl who watches anime and sci-fi shows. The girl who loves to sing and draw and write. The girl who likes to stand outside and feel the power of a thunderstorm or sit in a field and look at the stars. Nobody wants that girl. Everybody wants my body.
I gave up hope a while ago that someone would come along and sweep me off my feet. And I have been right so far.
Mina carefully approached me and put her hands on my shoulders.
"Did you not see how hard he was blushing just now? Bakugo has liked you from the start. That's why he yells at you more than anyone. He doesn't know how to express his feelings properly."
"I doubt that." I said, then smiled and walked away.
The next day Kirishima came up to me and said, "Hey, you know how you helped me with my self worth issues a while ago? Do you think you could do that for Bakugo and his anger issues? Like, turn down his adrenaline dial a little?"
"If he's up for it then yeah. I just don't want him to do it against his will."
"Awesome! He's already waiting."
"WHAT?!? Where?!"
Kirishima laughed at me before saying he was in his room. I told him I just had to check that I didn't have any homework to do and then I would head up. Kirishima thanked me and then walked off.
I pulled out my phone and checked my classes really quick. Nothing. I nodded my head celebrating the fact that I could watch anime later without having to stress about school.
When I got up to Bakugo's room I knocked softly and heard a gruff "come in."
I opened the door and saw Katsuki laying on his bed while scrolling on his phone. He sat up when he saw me.
"I heard you wanted my help with some anger issues."
"Yeah, and?"
"Do you really want my help or not?"
"Yeah dumbass, I would have kicked you out of here way earlier if I didn't."
"Okay okay. Gosh."
I walked over to his bed and sat down cross legged while facing him. He copied me and looked into my eyes.
"Now what?"
"I have to touch you for it to work properly. Is that okay?"
"It's fine, just get it over with."
I lifted up my hands and put my thumbs on his cheek bones, just under his eyes. The rest of my fingers slipped into his hair. He felt so soft. I've never touched him before. And it looked like he hasn't been touched softly in a long time because he shivered slightly. I closed my eyes and put my forehead against his. Once we touched I activated my quirk.
"Can you hear me?"
"Yeah, this is weird."
"I guess it is. So, everyone's chemical switches are in a different place in their mind web. I'm going to have to search around for a minute. Just try and stay calm and breath. I'll talk to you in a minute."
I got no response and took it as the okay to look around.
I manifested my mental body and was dropped into a long hallway with doors on both sides. It went on for a while but I could still see the end. I began opening doors and looking inside to try and find the chemical switches. I had gone down maybe halfway before I encountered the first locked door.
"Hey, Bakugo, this is going to sound weird but I'm at a locked door. Do you think you could think of a skeleton key so I can get it open?"
"I guess, why can't you make one? You're the one with the mind powers."
"I can only walk through people's minds. I can't conjure things. By having you make the key you subconsciously give me permission to open locked doors."
"...Alright."
I heard something clatter onto the floor beside me. I looked over and picked up the key. Funny thing is it was one of those old fashioned ones that you see in Disney shows.
I opened the door and walked in. There was a lone table in the middle of the room. On the table was an old box TV and a cassette recorder lying next to it.
Out of curiosity I turned on the TV. A memory began playing. I was sucked into Bakugo's point of view and lived what he had lived. I almost screamed when a sludge monster forced itself upon him. I could feel the coldness of the monster going down Bakugo's throat as if it were my own. I felt his pain. I felt his helplessness as he tried to fight but couldn't.
I ripped myself out of the memory. I was panting. Hard. I grabbed my throat. After I somewhat recovered I hit play on the recorder. I heard Bakugo sobbing. Heard him call himself weak and worthless. That he could never be a hero if he couldn't even save himself. I realized I was in Bakkugo's PTSD room and I was listening to the panic attacks he's had.
"What are you doing? Have you found it yet?"
Tears were streaming down my face.
"N-no not yet. I think I'm close though."
"Are you crying?"
"Why would I be crying? I'm not crying."
There was silence after that.
I swore to myself that I would try and be a little nicer to him.
I was five doors away from the end of the hallway. The next one I checked was, thankfully, the chemical room.
It looked like a science lab from a Marvel movie. There were tall tubes of chemicals hanging off the walls. They all had pipes leading to other parts of the brain or body. I looked at all of the labels before finding the adrenaline one. The gage was turned all of the way up. I tried to turn the dial down but it wouldn't budge. I put all of my weight behind it and it still wouldn't move.
"I need you to make a wrench for me. The dial for your adrenaline won't move. It might be hard for you to make at first but once your subconscious accepts that you really do want to change, it'll work."
"Okay, I'll try."
I sat in silence for a minute. Then two. Then five.
"Damnit this is pointless! It's not working!"
"Bakugo calm down. Take a deep breath, okay. Yell at yourself internally about why you want to change and then try again."
I had forgotten that I would still be able to hear his internal pep talk because I literally was inside his head.
I heard his voice, it kind of sounded like it was coming through an intercom, yelling at himself.
"Screw you! You want to be the number one hero? You gotta turn down those anger issues! You gotta be able to get along with people! You wanna impress people? You wanna impress Ketly? You gotta control yourself ya hear?! How is she ever going to like you back if you can't even talk to her normally? Dipshit. She's so nice to everyone. So funny, nerdy, creative, and beautiful. She's snarky with you cause you're an asshole. Don't you want to prove yourself to her? Be her hero?"
I stood in utter astonishment. Tears were rolling down my face once again. I clutched the wrench that appeared in my hands. The wrench! I put my feelings aside and jumped at the adrenaline dial. I used the wrench to crank it down to the normal level. Then I went and found the serotonin tube and turned it up to where it was supposed to be. This boy was barely living it was so low.
"Okay Bakugo. I'm going to break the link."
I opened my eyes. And looked into Katsuki's red ones. His eyes were half lidded and his mouth was hanging open. My hands slipped from his face and our foreheads separated when he flopped back onto his bed.
I sat up a little more and saw that he was asleep. Soft breaths escaped his lips.
This was to be expected. After major chemical corrections like that the brain needs to rest in order to adjust.
I gently got off the bed and straightened out his legs, then draped a nearby throw blanket over him.
He looked so peaceful when he was sleeping. The furrow between his eyebrows that was always there was gone. He looked soft.
In that moment I was able to truly look at him. And I realized how beautiful he actually was. His spiky hair laid perfectly, his lips looked soft, his nose had the perfect curve and point, his eyes the perfect intensity, the eyebrows the perfect shape. He was truly an angel in that moment.
I leaned forward and pressed a kiss against his forehead, then whispered, "I'm sorry about what happened to you, I'll be here for you. You are a hero."
Then I got up and walked out of the room.
A few hours later I was in the kitchen looking for a snack. I had a blanket over my head and wrapped around my body while I stood like a gremlin in the middle of the pantry. I decided on some pretzels and oatmeal squares. I took a handful of each thing and put them in a plastic cup before trying to escape back to my room to watch One Punch Man. But when I turned around I bumped into someone and almost dropped my food.
I made a strange squeak of surprise and backed up and few steps before looking at whoever was standing there.
"Hi Ketly."
Bakugo was standing in front of me with...a smile on his face...
"Why are you smiling?"
"Why not? Is it wrong for me to smile?"
He stepped closer to me and smiled a little wider. I remembered what I overheard when I was in Bakugo's mind. My cheeks lit up like a Christmas tree.
"N-nah you're good. You can smile if you want."
I not so casually walked out of the kitchen but felt his eyes on me the entire time.
I got to the doorway when I heard my name.
"Ketly, I know you heard me. I know you know how I feel about you."
I stood still for a second. I was too scared to turn around. I just wanted to watch anime, man...
I glanced over my shoulder for a split second and then bolted out of the room. I heard thundering footsteps behind me and my adrenaline spiked. I ran even faster and managed to make it into the elevator. I smashed the close door button frantically as I watched Bakugo come closer and closer. The doors finally closed and I was lifted to my floor. I let out a sigh of relief as I stepped out into the hallway.
"Ketly! You have to talk to me at some point!"
I looked down the hall and let out a screech and Bakugo stumbled out of the stairwell door. I ran as fast as I could to my room and slammed the door shut while locking it.
I leaned against the door and slid down to the ground.
I may have lowered Katsuki's adrenaline levels to normal but that doesn't mean he can't get the occasional spike like everyone else.
I was waiting to hear pounding on my door but everything was scarily quiet.
I then heard a soft knock on my door.
I shakily stood up and opened it just a crack.
Bakugo was standing there with a single rose in his hand. He watched me through the small crack of the door.
"Where did you get that?"
"Mina gave it to me to give to you. I guess she was waiting for this to happen."
Then it hit me. This was all a plan. Put together by Bakugo, Mina, and Kirishima.
"Haha very funny. Mina you can come out with the camera now! Where's Kirishima? Is he filming too?"
I opened the door and walked out of my room into the hallway. There was no one there except for me and Bakugo.
"This was a good prank you guys. You really had me there for a second."
"Ketly, what are you talking about? You think this is a prank?"
"Well yeah, why wouldn't it be? I mean it's kinda strange for YOU to like ME. We're nothing alike."
"That's not true. We're very alike. You can put up with my bullshit like no one's business. If you can do that then it means you have some idea of how my brain works."
"That doesn't mean we're the same though."
"How do you know? You wont give me or yourself the chance to find out."
"If you're just toying with me please leave me alone."
I looked down, turned around and walked back into my bedroom. As I was closing the door I heard, "Ketly, wait. I'm not toying with you. I would never do that. Please talk to me. Everything you heard earlier was true. I think...damnit I think you're smart, and kind, and sarcastic, and funny, and beautiful! I think you're the one for me! You're perfect! I want to marry you someday! I love you! If you won't talk to me then at least take the damn flower."
I was once again frozen. It took me a second but I eventually turned around and gently took the rose from his hand. I didn't look up at him. I just quietly went back into my room and softly closed the door.
I stood there. Staring at the flower.
Someone...loves me?
"Dude, what happened?"
"Yeah, I heard you yelling after I gave you the flower."
"I-I messed up. I told her I love her. I said I want to marry her someday."
"Holy crap, you did?"
"That's a little weird but kinda romantic at the same time."
"She doesn't believe me. She thought it was a joke."
Silence.
"Bakugo, she's been hurt many times in the past. She has really bad trust issues. You're going to have to be patient with her."
"Yeah bro, you have to sweep her off her feet, show her how much you care. Romance her like in olden days."
"Will that work?"
"With you being more calm now, you might be able to pull it off. Here I have a plan for you."
Mina, Kirishima, and Bakugo all fell quiet. They were talking just quietly enough that I couldn't hear. I guess they agreed on the plan because I heard Mina go back into her room, and Kiri and Katsuki walk down the hall to the elevator.
Nothing happened for a few days. Bakugo would just stare at me from a distance with this sad look in his eyes. Our teachers would yell at him in class for not paying attention.
I was casually talking to Izuku at lunch when Bakugo came up to me.
"You should come sit with me. You haven't sat with us for a few days."
"For a reason Baku. I need some space. Now please excuse me, I was talking to Midoriya."
"Frickin...Will you please come and sit with me?"
"What was that? I couldn't quite hear what you said? Did I hear a please?"
My snarky-ness came out again. Bakugo was kind of pissing me off but at the same time he looked really cute when flustered.
"Yes, now will you come with me or not?"
"No, I think I'll stay here."
I went back to talking to Izu and heard Katsuki click his tongue before walking away. Not too long after he came back and sat right next to me. His shoulder pressed against mine and our legs touched all the way down our thighs. I blushed but refused to look at him.
