Merlin: What if Merlin was the 5th Founder of Hogwarts?

Forget the Merlin of the Harry Potter series for this one.

What if Merlin felt a HUGE surge of magic run through him and the only thing he could think of was that Arthur had returned, but instead it was 4 people who had been gifted with the ability to do magic.

Merlin helped those 4 control their magic and taught them everything he knew. By the time they learnt everything, a new generation of magic users had developed but with no way to learn how to control it and they were about to be revealed to the muggles.

So the 4 decided that they would create a school for this new generation to learn to control this magic. (Since these new users had weaker magic, they had to use wands to use their magic)

Merlin created the Hogwarts castle, finishing it with the Room of Requirement to help any person in Hogwarts who needed it.

Now, there was another problem.

How were the students supposed to be sorted into their houses? Merlin and the others thought for a while before Merlin had an idea, Merlin enchanted Gryffindor's hat so that, when the hat was put on top of a student's head, it would sort them into their house.

That, my friend, is how Hogwarts was really born.

Merlin left after that, making the 4 promise that no one was to know what he did and take all the credit themselves.

Every few generations, he would disguise himself as an exchange student from Durmstrang or Ilvermorny, and learn the newest spells and potions. Obviously, due to his strong magic, he was never able to wield a wand, so he disguised his staff to shrink to the size of a wand for him to use.
