Titan anxiously tapped his foot to a rhythm that clearly only he could hear as the two stood in a tense silence the next morning in the lift on the way down to the training centre. The two of them had been given near identical outfits consisting of; tight black bottoms, a long-sleeved emerald green tunic, and leather shoes. Mallory had tried to tame her thick hair into some semblance of a ponytail, stubbornly still using her weathered old hairband from home instead of a new one from the Capital.
The subtle act of rebellion put a smile on her face.
"So, what's the game plan?" Titan rattled out as they got closer and closer to the training centre, "I know some tributes ally with their district partners—,"
"—I'm gonna stop you there big guy." Mallory patted him on the back, faux sympathy dripping from her demeanour, "Just because we come from the same place doesn't mean we're friends or allies, no I need an ally who is both skilled and yet not physically stronger than me."
"You look like you could squish my head like a grape," the two stepped off the lift, Titan staring at her with wide eyes as they joined the other tributes, "that automatically takes you out of the running, sorry."
Mallory slinked away from him discreetly as she looked around the enormous gymnasium. It was filled with various weapons and obstacle courses, Johanna would be training Mallory in private while Blight would be training Titan. Johanna had told her to showcase her strength in the training sessions, they wouldn't be falling for the weak, meek District Seven act two consecutive years in a row. She needed to prove that she wasn't to be messed with while also scoping out potential allies.
The other tributes were gathered around in a tense circle, dresses similar to her and Titan with their district numbers pinned to their shirts. Mallory could already see the groups beginning to form. The Careers from District's one and two seemed awfully close as they snickered at the sight of some of the younger, weaker looking tributes. The boy from four seemed to be on the edge of their group — weary about leaving his bright haired district companion behind, though she seemed perfectly content analysing the other tributes and scribbling in a notebook.
A minute after the last tributes arrived the head trainer — Atala — a tall, athletic and overall formidable woman stepped up and began to explain their training schedule.
Experts in each skill would remain at their stations. They were free to travel from area to area as they chose, per their mentor's instructions. Some of the stations taught survival skills, others fighting techniques. They were forbidden to engage in any combative exercise with another tribute — a rule Mallory could see being broken almost immediately — though there were assistants on hand if they wanted to practice with a partner.
