The boy finished reading a nearly-formed screen when he swiped it away. He left the main Status Sheet open and gazed upon his quantified attributes. He appeared quite... no, very, is probably the more accurate term, weak. His highest stat was "INT," or, "Intelligence." It was estimated to be fourteen. The way that Intelligence worked was quite vague. As if it was subject to change at any moment. For the time being, it just increased his IQ score with each point accumulated.

By far, the stat that disappointed him the most was his "STR," or, "Strength" stat. At a whopping three, this gave him the ability to lift a maximum of thirty pounds under normal circumstances. To rub salt in the wound, the system gave the boy an average of pounds people can lift. That average was one hundred and thirty-five pounds.
Feeling depressed now, the boy moved on to another physical attribute. "DEX," or, "Dexterity." With the boy's Dexterity at five, he had acquired mixed feelings on the subject. On the one hand, it wasn't as bad as his Strength, but on the other, it was still low compared to the average... the boy's speed was ten miles per hour or sixteen kilometers per hour. The average speed was fifteen miles per hour or twenty-four kilometers per hour.

Despite this saddening information, the boy now knew where he stood among the population. He was very much below average. He contemplated the reasoning for this... power? He considered it a power of some sort. Why was it given to him? To promote a healthy lifestyle? This seemed like an over-the-top way of ensuring that.

The boy contemplated the reasons for this ability forming in front of him, but... nothing that made sense immediately came to mind, so the boy just went back to recapping the information he had just learned.

His lowest stat so far was his "VIT," or, "Vitality." Which measured how many health points he had. His max "HP," was currently sixty. With two points in Vitality, each worth five HP, that meant the boy had a base health of fifty. Half of what the usual game character started with.

With that basic rundown of the system complete, the boy closed the holographic screens floating in front of him and turned his attention to the sky. Unfortunately, he didn't take very long to organize his thoughts, so only about two minutes had passed...

"Ugh... time, what the hell, man?!" The boy yelled up at the sky. He may have attracted strange looks from... the one other person outside at this hour. The boy, Suzuki, gave the one other person who was outside a distant apology and then quickly shuffled away.

It was at this point that the boy had truly come to regret getting to school so early. A few hours had passed since he figured out the basics of his stats, and so far he had been doing anything to keep himself from being dreadfully bored. He was seated in the empty cafeteria. He was sitting at the table in the very middle of the room. The spacious room, with no one in it. Gave the boy a spark of existential dread. But, he decided to simply ignore the heat death of the universe slowly closing in on him and pulled out his phone. He opened up his generic web browser, and on the home page of said browser, there appeared to be a news article about a man who had disappeared without a trace. With nothing else to do, the boy tapped his thumb onto the article and it opened up for the boy to view the whole story.

After quickly reading through the article, the boy summarized what the story was about. According to the article, there was a man, who had recently become the CEO of a rising tech company. The man had recently traveled to Kuoh to see if he could open up a location in the area, but soon after he had arrived, he had simply vanished. According to investigators, he had left everything in his hotel room, the only thing he took with him was his wallet and hotel key.
The story had been posted just a few days ago. It almost sounded like the plot of a generic horror movie.

The boy looked up when he heard the clattering of more people entering the building from just down the hall.

He pressed a button on the side of his phone and, without checking it, put it in his pocket as the screen turned off. Suzuki stood up and made his way out of the cafeteria.
He found himself in the middle of a hallway filled with students of varying ages. However, the most common sight was moody teenagers yawning as they chatted with the people beside them.
