The final bell rang and the students eager to get home flooded the courtyard of Kuoh Academy.
While normally Kyu would've tried heading the crowd to get home as quickly as possible, he had a different objective: Turn into a devil.

He took his sweet time walking back to the Occult Research Clubhouse, wondering how exactly he would change when he abandoned his humanity. He was amused by the idea of losing his humanity, morals, and ethics, yet remaining exactly the same. It wasn't like he had the mindset of a saint, after all.

He tilted his head up and took in the sky. The dazzling blue had grown dull as the day dragged on. Still, a nice view was a nice view.

The boy snapped back to the present when he reached the steps leading to the devil's doorway. He debated for almost a second whether he should knock before he pulled the door open and walked in without warning.
The exquisite woodwork was apparent even if some dust had collected on the surfaces. Kyu once again debated whether he should violate basic politeness by going through every single room in the building, but this time he decided against it. If he was going to learn everything these people had to learn, he shouldn't be too rude.

Returning his gaze to the stairwell, he retraced Toujou's footsteps from when he had been dragged here a few hours prior.
Up the stairs, turning right, and proceeding down the hallway until he reached a pair of similarly well-made wooden double doors. He tapped his knuckles against the left door before swinging it open.

"If Koneko-chan wants him in, how can I say no?" The redhead told the other devils in the room.

"Still talking about me? At a certain point that can be called rude, you know." The intruding boy said.

Himejima giggled as if on command. "Oh, my. How impolite of us." She said, lightly pressing her hand against her cheek.

"So, how are we going to do this?" asked Kyu. "Do I just jump off the roof and you raise me like a necromancer?"

"That's... one way, but not necessary. You don't have to die to transition into a devil." Gremory explained. Kyu knew that his mere presence had begun to agitate her, as evidenced by her clenched jaw. The boy felt nothing, he never really liked showy authority figures.

"Alright then. Can you run me through the process? I want to know what the hell you're going to do to me." He said bluntly, although he couldn't help but smile to himself on his usage of the word "hell."

"Ah, Buchou, may I explain? I'd like the pleasure of taking his first time." Himejima said, hidden intent dripping from each word she spoke.
Kyu froze. He slowly turned his head to look at the two who had moved to the side upon his entry.

"I feel scared. Should I be scared?" said the boy as he looked for any signs of encouragement from the two sidelined devils.

Kiba slowly shook his head with a serene look on his face. Toujou rapidly nodded while making direct eye contact with Kyu.
"You're sending mixed signals! I need something concrete!" He yelled as he took a step back, the patient smile on Himejima's face grew more frightening the longer she stayed silent.

"Go ahead, Akeno." Gremory told her.

Himejima inhaled before beginning. Kyu had the split-second feeling that this would take a while.

"Devil society has revolved around the game of chess in recent generations. Are you familiar?" She prompted Kyu.
"Yes." He answered shortly so Himejima could keep her flow going.
"So, devil rankings are sorted according to power, with the strongest devils at the apex of our government. Most devils are promoted through a chess-like system which doubles as a reincarnation method. Put simply: we have magic chess pieces that can change you into a devil." She paused briefly. Kyu took this as a sign that he could ask questions.
