The Trick

First Year - Train Ride Home

Mariah's POV

The boys followed behind Mariah and Charlie as they got onto The Hogwarts Express.The two girls walked down the train, looking for an empty compartment for the six of them. When they finally found one they put their stuff in the slots above the seats. The boys quickly followed and did the same. 

“I can’t believe our first year is already over!” Mariah said, slumping down into her seat, next to Remus. Charlie sat next to Mariah and leaned her head on her shoulder.

“Don’t worry next year will come faster than you can say ‘butterscotch’!” Charlie said, eyes closed. 

“Hopefully not that soon,” James said, sitting next to Sirius and Peter. “You are all amazing, but I need my rest.” Sirius nodded his head, agreeing with James. 

Charlie’s head shot up. “There will no longer be time for rest. We have to use every free moment we have to plan our big prank!” They all rolled their eyes at Charlie. “I’m being serious. We can’t waste a minute on anything else from now on.”

Remus tilted his head to look at Charlie. “Well, go on then, tell us what you were thinking,” 

Charlie sat up straighter and looked at everyone. “Okay, so we first have to….” The group listened to Charlie as she fed them different ideas for their great end of school prank. The trees whizzed past the train as Sirius began to add to Charlie’s scheming. 

“Can you two be a little bit quieter, please? I’m trying to sleep.” Peter said, curling up into the corner of his seat. They all laughed as Charlie and Sirius began to talk even louder. Peter laughed along with them after his failed attempt to act annoyed. 

As Mariah laughed with her friends she started to dread going back home. She wanted to stay at Hogwarts with her friends where she felt she truly belgoned. She shook the feeling off and decided to focus on what was going on now. 

Mariah began to listen to the plan that was starting to form and felt happy to finally have a group of people she could call family.
