At last, the music stopped.
The clock didn't strike midnight, but I knew this dream of a ball was about to come to an end.
"Your performance was absolutely magnifique! To think this gem of a pianist lay undiscovered until this moment!" - "I'm honoured that you were pleased with my performance."
Yoongi smiled cordially at the host, bowing slightly at the waist.
When I see him like this, what Jisung told me before makes perfect sense.
We stood by the entrance for a bit, chatting with the host. And I realised that a crowd of other party guests had gathered around us.
"It was a most wonderful performance! That was an impromptu variation, non? And you changed the music according to the mood of the room. I felt as if I were witnessing the second coming of Min Yoongi!"
Uh-oh...
I felt my body go tense beside Yoongi, who stood beside me with the same polite smile on his face, not even flinching.
"But, Yoongi wanted to be the Imperial Royal Curt's music director and never achieved it. So it may be bad luck to compare this up and coming young pianist with one who ultimately failed."
The man laughed, completely oblivious that the real Yoongi stood before him.
"You know, there are rumours that the man who held the post Yoongi desired was jealous of him, and poisoned him to death!"
Poisoned him to death?!
"A rumour is only a rumour. And now it's been so long, we shall never know the truth. At any rate, I thank you for your compliments."
Yoongi responded so politely, ignoring the fact that he had just been unknowingly insulted.
"You've got a point. I'm looking forward to seeing more performances from young musicians such as yourself." - "Merci."
We bid goodnight to the host and the guests, and stepped out into the brisk Paris night.
Now that we were away from the excitement and bustle of the party, I couldn't stop thinking abot what I'd just heard.
Namjoon told me that all the residents of the mansion chose to become vampires after their human lives ended.
At that time, I didn't even think about the manner in which their lives had ended.
Despite the fact that Yoongi stood next to me, alive and well as a vampire, it was possible that his human life could have ended violently, poisoned to death as the man had said. And if it was still a rumour, that must mean no one knows the truth.
I wonder if deep down, he was shocked that someone brought it up?
I quickened my pace to catch up with him as he strode ahead of me down the cobblestone street.
"Yoongi, about what that man said..." - "Don't worry. I found out about the poisoning rumours as soon as I came to this century. And just as I told him, no one knows the truth. Not even me... honestly, I don't even care anymore."
He had that same cold look in his eyes as when we first met, but there was something else there, too... sadness.
It doesn't look like he doesn't care anymore.
I want to know more, but I don't want to pry.
I reluctantly kept quiet, suppressing the urge to try to get him to open up to me about his feelings.
Neither of us spoke much as we climbed back into the carriage and rode back to the mansion.
Once home, I went to my room and shed the heavy ball gown, then changed into my normal clothes.
