uncontroversialHe was no fun. Before she could even know what it felt like to fly, she was standing in her room. Alone.
His anger only filled her with excitement.
Any emotion was a welcome relief from the calm facade he always aimed for. Days later he was still failing to hide his annoy with her.
When she wasn't with Adrian searching for others, then she worked as a shield between Julian and Damous. On top of that, she embraced her role as Queen. Just a little.
She met with the New Rulers everyday now and it was amazing how much better she felt because of it. She ran her studies about mates, or she always started to, then she'd find something better to do.
Yesterday she watched videos of Frick during his first year of training. Dude has not always been so good at everything he tries.
Research was boring. All the old mates always said the same thing. Why would they want to be parted from their mates? The newer ones would love to be, but the pull was there. Even with the mates who didn't yet care for each other.
She met with Jace and Zawinda.
Those two were like looking at different people.
Jase hardly ever took his eyes off his mate, and she was the one always touching him. Patting his hand every few moments. Caressing his arm. She smiled twice, and when she smiled, he smiled.
They both looked smitten, and it was hard to believe that Jase was a boy who's had multiple sexual partners. It was hard to recognize that he was the boy who'd been smoking and willing to put his mate through hell for a six-pack.
Zawinda had changed, too.
Jess asked her why she was always touching Jace when her people didn't practice that habit, and she said because her mate liked the reassurance of her feelings.
So, there you go.
Even with Zawinda out of hearing, Jace looked her way often. She kept giving him nods of encouragement like this might be hard on him.
"Jace, can I speak frank with you?"
He barely glanced Jess's way. His eyes were on his mate.
"Sure. She talks about you a lot. She says you are our Queen now and that I have to show you the up most respect."
"How do you feel about me being your Queen?"
"I want her to be proud of me. I guess having a Queen isn't so bad. It means a lot to her. She doesn't even see it as a duty, it's an honor for her." Jace finally looked at Jess. "She's confused about why we are here, but proud to help, too. We aren't in trouble, are we? That would upset her."
"You can feel what she's feeling. Does that bother you?"
"At first, but now it seems... comforting. It helps me take care of her."
"I remember when you didn't want to take care of her."
He blushed and looked back at his mate. "She doesn't hold that against me. She says everyone needs a time for adjustment."
"So, you would say that your relationship is a success?"
"Yes. She says that no one can ever separate us. Are you trying to?"
