On the way to the boys' house, we walk under the streetlights and the continuous high beams of the cars that pass by us with some drivers eager to get home after a long day of work. With all my energies depleted due to the continuous movement of these two days, I get away from the group for a moment and I stay behind to try to reconnect with myself and re-draw energy from anywhere until we reach the student residence. God, I'm so tired.
I unlock the phone to discover that I have many messages from Lizzy and Mary on WhatsApp and, seeing that it is not a very good time to answer, I decide to check the messages, but I can only read their insistent messages with which I imagine they were trying to get me to quickly get into WhatsApp, videos that I cannot see and something about them having a party with the boys, including Thomas.
I put my phone away and look at the group. Bailee has Blake by the arm, while he talks animatedly to George and Reece about something that happened to him in a college class. I consider joining them so I don't seem antisocial, but the idea vanish the moment Reece looks back at me and slows down to stand next to me.
"A little more and I lose sight of you", Reece murmurs as he tries to match his step with mine since he takes longer steps. I laugh slightly at his comment as I look aside trying to hide a smile that was about to show.
"Sorry, I guess I'm a bit tired from all the noise and movement. And I didn't sleep much yesterday either", I sigh as I shelter my hands from the cold inside my jacket pockets.
He winces at my last statement and I look forward, seeing the tree branches slightly sway from the cold draft that clutches us. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. Finally, Reece nods his head, letting a silence come between us for a few seconds until his voice breaks the air again.
"Has it been worth hanging out with us so far?", the blonde boy asks cautiously but a bit anxious to know the answer.
"Without a doubt, I forgot how much fun it was to spend time with you." I exclaim a little more excited and awaked than before. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Reece cracking a small smile and continue, seeing that he is not going to say anything back, "Of course, once I'm back, I will have time to regret not having done anything productive this weekend."
"Did you have a lot of things to do?"
"Not much, but i guess i wouldn't have done much this weekend anyway", Reece looks at me confused and then, I realize my nonsense. "Forget what I said", I mutter when I see that what I just said doesn't make sense.
"Why's that?", he asks intrigued as he hides his hands in the pockets of his red jacket as well.
"Because what I have is mostly group work and my friends had already planned a party for this weekend, so I can safely say that none of us have done anything." I resume the crazy plans of my friends going crazy this weekend.
"They seem pretty fun to be around, don't they?"
"Yeah, they're great! In fact, they're partying right now and they've sent me a ton of messages, who knows what they are about", I smile instantly at the reminder of my college friends and take a quick look at my phone to see that I have even more messages.
"Shouldn't you answer them? Maybe it is important." Reece implies curiously as he watches me play with my cell phone, passing it from hand to hand.
"I don't think so, and I'm talking to you right now so... I'll answer them later."
Just then, the sound of running water reaches my ears and I let myself be guided by the sound until I reach an area of the bridge where you can see the river as much as possible in the dark of night.
