Ugh, did Harvey seriously have to pick on me at school today? What did I ever do to him? So I'm not enthusiastic about my detention, it's detention! Who cares! I may have failed French but when is that ever gonna matter to me?
I walked out the school gates sulking, I'm going to be all lonely on the bus today since I had to stay back for after-school detention. As I walked down the street the 601 bus came, and I frantically ran, praying that I would be able to cross the road in time - no, I missed the bus. Just to make my life harder, I now have to wait another 30 minutes for the next bus. Dad is gonna be hella mad at me - it's the first training session of the season.
----------
I got on the bus, and boy it was a relief. All I needed now was to get home fast; it would be so awkward to turn up late to training seeing as Dad is the coach. I put my earphones in and blasted 'River by Bishop Briggs' at full volume, to block out all my stresses from the school day. Apart from this song, football was the only other thing that motivated me at the moment.
Shut your mouth, baby, stand and deliver
Holy hands, will they make me a sinner?
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a river
Choke this love 'til the veins start to shiver
One last breath 'til the tears start to wither
Like a river, like a river
Shut your mouth and run me like a riverI pressed the stop button and got off of the bus, running home to get ready for football. As I arrived, I raced through the door and sprinted up the stairs. I yanked all my football clothes out of the closet and breathlessly pulled them onto me. I packed my bags with snacks and water, and my phone of course.
Just as I reached the landing of the stairs, Dad called me down to the car to help pack the balls and poles for training.
"There are going to be some new boys at training today, so please be nice to them. I know you want to hang out with the other girls on the team, but I really want the new kids to feel welcome on the team. You'll be able to do that right, Erin?" said Dad.
"Yeah, yeah whatever sure," I mumbled. I hopped into the car and felt a jolt of excitement as Dad pushed the accelerator.
When we arrived at training I recognised a few familiar faces on the field, and one in particular. Josh. Boy, that kid had a major crush on me that he could not hide. No matter how much he tried, it was so damn obvious that he liked me. I avoided eye contact with him so that he wouldn't come up to me and embarrass me in front of Dad.
Crap. Crap. Crap. He saw me. No. Ugh, why.
"Hey Erin! How was your summer?" Josh asked.
"Good, I guess. I didn't do much except hang out with my friends," I replied. Ugh, I want this conversation to end.
"But you couldn't have," - What? How would you know? - "You didn't hang out with me!" he chuckled. I gave him an awkward look and nervously laughed.
"I'm kidding, don't worry Erin. But I expect you to hang out with me next holiday, 'kay?" He smirked and walked away. Gosh, I really hate this kid. He's so irritating.
Dad finished his conversation with the Club Manager and we headed down to the field. He gave me some cones and poles, and I set them up around the field as usual. I returned to Dad and took a big swig of water out of my bottle. A few more players arrived and we finished our catch-ups with each other.
"Alrighty guys, welcome back to the season. I'm sure you all want to catch up and talk with each other now, but it's time to train. You guys were so close to a win last year but narrowly missed it to the Kolts. With enough training this year, I think that we can pull off a win! First things first, we have some new players this season. We have Alex over here, who some of you may know from Tree Mountain High School," Dad told us.
His words began to fade as I concentrated on the rosy cheeks and perky dimples of the new boy. Alex and Erin. Erin and Alex. Elex or Arin? He locked eyes with me and I quickly walked away. That was close. I continued thinking about us- I mean him- I mean training with him as a new member of the team. He was... cute.
"Oi Erin, stop daydreaming and get in the goals!" Dad shouted.
"Yep - sorry - right, okay," I replied. I put on my goalie gloves and ran over to the far goals ready for training.
----------
The sky darkened and became the night sky. I assisted Dad in packing up the supplies and hauled the ball bags over my shoulder.
"Need some help with that? Erin, isn't it?" asked an unfamiliar voice. I turned around to face Alex. Shoot, his eyes look nice and majestically green in the moonlight.
"I, uh, yeah, it's Erin. And um, I'll be fine. Thanks for offering," I replied. Seriously Erin! You could do better than that. Honestly, he's just a boy - a very cute boy - like I said, just a boy. He persisted, and I eventually gave in. Who could resist those spring green eyes?
Alex helped me to pack the bags back into the car and said goodbye. I reciprocated and stared just too long enough for Dad to notice. Damn. I got in the car and we reversed out of the parking lot. Dad side-eyed me, and I knew, that he knew.
"Before you say anything, I don't like him." Dad hummed that questionable mm-hmm hum that all parents use when they know that kids are lying. "I'm serious, he's just another boy. Don't worry. Honestly." At this point, I was panicking. I knew he could read through my lies.
"Sure Erin, sure."
