Lena had only been able to open her eyes for a few brief seconds before they became too heavy to keep open. She'd hoped that she'd once again find herself in the perfect dream world where she and Kara were together and happy and everything was right in the world. This wasn't the case, however, which Lena learned as she found herself trapped in her own body, awake and able to hear everything going on around her but not able to move or open her eyes.

If she had to guess, she'd say that the amount of pain medication they had her on was making it difficult for her to fully wake up. She could feel Kara's warm breath on her hand, hear her beautiful voice singing to her, but she couldn't see her, nor could she move to let her know that she was awake.

For what felt like hours, Lena lay still listening to Kara sing to her the most beautiful songs. Her voice was like that of an angel, and while it brough Lena such comfort to hear her sing, she was also well aware of the pain in Kara's voice. With each passing moment, Lena found herself praying to anyone who could hear her to just be able to somehow let Kara know that she could hear her, even if only for a moment. Anything to give her enough hope to take away some of the pain in her voice.

The sound of Kara's voice was interrupted by footsteps coming into the room, followed by a kind, sisterly voice. Alex.

"Kara you have to eat. It's been 2 days, and you haven't left her side since Kelly and I finished stitching her up. You've got to take care of yourself too. Go home, take a shower, get you something to eat. Sleep in your own bed. I promise we will call you if there is any change."

Lena felt her heart start to race, so much so that the monitors picked up on the increased speed causing an alarm to go off. She didn't want Kara to leave, she needed her here beside her! Her voice was the only thing helping tether her to reality!

"Alex, I can't leave her, I WON'T leave her! Not again! I will eat once I know that she's ok! But not one moment sooner!"

Kara began gently stroking her hair, never once letting go of her hand. She felt a gentle kiss on her forehead and Kara began to sing to her again. Her heart slowed again at the sound of her voice, quieting the alarms.

"I've made up my mind, don't need to think it over.
If I'm wrong I am right, don't need to look no further.
This ain't lust, I know this is love.
But If I tell the world, I'll never say enough
Cause it was not said to you, and that's exactly what I need to do.
If I'm in love with you..."

With every fiber of her being Lena willed herself to just make ONE movement, one single gesture to let Kara know that she could hear her, that she could FEEL her. She tried again to open her eyes, but they still felt to heavy. If only they'd dial back on the pain meds just a little! Lena was no stranger to pain, she could handle it! She gave up on trying to open her eyes and instead focused on the sound of Kara's voice and the warmth of her hand.

"Lena, please. You have to wake up. I...I never got to tell you...Please..."

The pain in Kara's voice was more intense than any pain Lena had felt in her life. She could tell by the way her voice was cracking that she was trying hard not to cry, the only thing Lena could do was listen as she sang,

"When the rain is blowing in your face and the whole world is on your case,
I could offer you a warm embrace to make you feel my love.
When the evening shadows and the stars appear and there is no one there to dry your tears,
I could hold you for a million years, to make you feel my love..."

Kara's voice finally broke, and she began to quietly sob.

"I could make you happy, make your dreams come true.
No there's nothing that I wouldn't do. Go to the ends of the earth for you.
To make you feel my love."

It was in this moment, lying in a state of paralysis that Lena realized that all of the feelings that she herself had been feeling for Kara were not one sided. As she listened to Kara's quiet sobs, Lena focused all of her attention on the hand that held Kara's.

And she squeezed.
