LAURIE

"They did it! Not me"!  The words being screamed came from a young girl, around 16-17 years old. She was being dragged into the interrogation room in handcuffs. Her clothes were torn and her hair looked as if it hadn't been washed or combed in a few days. The officers bringing her in struggled as she threw her little weight around, and her eyes scanned the whole precinct.

Scared. Alone.

"Where are they? Do you have them too? They'll get me out I promise you". Her eyes stopped and stared at me. She looked helpless, afraid and I was smitten by her.

"Daniels". I turn in my seat to see the chief standing there watching me watch them throw this young girl into interrogation room 2. "Want this interrogation Daniels? Should be easy. She's the one who did it".

I stand and nod my head grabbing my notebook ready to head on in. "Not So fast you spring chicken. Come with me". I follow the chief into his office and he motions for me to sit down. This was my first alone interrogation and I was ready to go but Chief Matthews wanted to talk, I was ready. "I just need a confession. You think you can handle that Daniels"?.

"Yes sir"

"Everything I've got is that she was fleeing the scene of the crime, a murder. She had blood on her hands when police picked her up a block away she had washed her hands and all she kept telling the responding officers is that. "They" did it she was going to meet them". I nod my head taking it all in. "But Daniels she needs to confess, there is no other people with her the witness only saw her".

"Is it possible they left before the witness saw them"?

"Just get in there Daniels if there are any changes and new evidence is brought in I'll let you know". I nod my head and quickly walk through the office, reaching my destination. Interrogation room 2.

I straighten my skirt, put a thin smile on my face and opened the door slowly.

"Hello my name is Officer Laurie Daniels. But please call me Laurie". I kept eye contact as I sat in the chair across from the young girl. Her face was scratched and she looked tired and worn.

"Hello Laurie, my name is Annabelle". I make a note, she didn't seem threatening and I couldn't manage to picture in my head her, a killer? "Laurie, I need my friends. They told me if I ever got in trouble they'll be there. Where are they"?

My smile remained as I tried to profile this young girl, "what are their names"?

"Sarah and Marie". She stared wide eyed as I jotted down the names making notes.

"What about their last names"?

"Sarah Parks and Marie Streets". Nodding again I wrote their names making sure she knew I was paying attention to everything she was saying.

"Miss".

"Call me Laurie".

"Alright Laurie, do you want to hear a story. The whole story"?

My eyes moved to look at Annabelle, she bit her finger nails, a nervous tick none the less. Her eyes darted around the room as if she was scared I might not want to. "This story is it why you're here"? There was a slight nod in her head and she removed her eyes from looking at mine. "Yes Annabelle tell me a story, I'll listen as long as you talk. I am NOT going anywhere". Her expression was mixed, relief yet scared. I held out my hand and laid back in my seat telling her to go ahead and expressing that I was getting comfortable for what she had to say.

Her story, wasn't one I was prepared to hear.
