Autumn POV

I walk out into the parking lot, ready to confront Jamie about what I heard in the hallway. For the last two hours I've been contemplating asking him. I decided on doing it.

Wait, where's the car? It isn't where we parked it this morning. I look around the lot, spotting the car at the back, Jamie in it, speeding away, leaving me stranded.

"Need a ride?" Riley says coming up next to me, trying to hide a smile.

I fold my arms over my chest, "I'd rather walk." I turn around, fully intending to do so. Riley grabs my arm, making me flinch and pull my arm out of his grip.

"Can you please give me a second chance at being your friend?" He whispers, almost desperately.

I crack. "You get one more chance, that's it." I say, walking towards the car.

"Autumn?"

"Yes?" I say, slightly annoyed. C'mon let's just get home already.

"Car's that way." He points with his thumb, keeping his eyes on me. I walk in the direction he's pointing, head down and cheeks flaming.

Riley talks the whole way to my house, but I don't listen. I'm not ready to forgive him yet, let alone be friends.

"So, are we friends?" He says as he pulls up to my house. I face towards him. His eyes are two big, green forests. It makes me melt. Why does he have this effect on me?

"It's going to take a lot more than a ride home for me to forgive you." I say, instantly regretting it. His face falls, making my heart break. Strangely, it feels like we've been here before.

When he says nothing, I start getting out of the car, only to be stopped by a loud thump. I turn around to see Riley rubbing his hand, his face masked with pain.

"Punching your car isn't going to change anything." I whisper. I stare at him in silence for a few seconds before getting out of the car and running up the steps, not looking back.

"Jamie Gabriel Phillips!" I throw my backpack down on the floor, making my presence more known.

"In here." His voice comes from the kitchen. I follow it, coming around the corner to him eating an apple and reading a book.

"Why would you-" He cuts me off.

"Did you know that Jesus had a sister named Aura who had the same miracle-making-magic as him, if not more. For some reason, Mary and Joseph thought that it wouldn't be fair to Jesus, so they kept her 'powers' secret. She wasn't well known." He says, holding up the bible.

"Why would I care about your Youth-Group assignment?"

"Because it keeps you from yelling at me for leaving you at school."

"You little butt." I say.

"I'll be in my room." Jamie says. He puts his apple in my hand as he passes me. Brothers are so dumb. Seriously, God just said "Let's make a creature that will annoy the crap out of their sisters." Yeah, genius plan.

I go to the cupboard, picking out all of the junk food so I can eat it to get back at Jamie. I hope he has fun with his fruit. When I turn around, I drop all of it.

There's a woman standing in my kitchen. A tall, blonde women, in her twenty's, is standing in my kitchen.

"Who are you?" I say. She looks at me, seeming surprised that I'm talking to her.

"I'm Jess." She says quietly, almost a whisper. "Where am I?"

"You're in my house. Do you need help?" I ask, genuinely concerned. The longer I look at her the more familiar she looks to me.  She gasps, placing her hand on her throat, looking terrified.

"He did this to me." She looks like she's on the verge of crying. I move towards her, just now noticing the bruise around her hairline.

"Who did this to you?" I ask, angry that anyone could do anything to hurt her. I reach out my hands but leave them suspended in the air when she flinches away from me. I know that feeling all too well.

"You can tell me." I whisper.

"My husband." A single tear rolls down her face. "He-he killed me. I'm dead." A sob escapes her throat. The sounds makes my heart go out to her.

Wait. She's dead? I'm talking to a ghost?

"Are you Jessica Montey?" I ask. She nods. That's why she looks so familiar. This woman is my neighbor. Her husband just got released from jail a week ago. Looks like he's going back pretty dang soon.

"Why am I still here?" She asks. "And why did I end up here?"

"I don't know why you came here. Maybe part of you still wants to stay." I've watched too many episodes of Supernatural to know what's going on. She doesn't answer, but her face clouds with guilt.

"You still love him don't you?" I whisper. She lets out a breath of relief and nods. "Jessica, you have to let go of him." Her lip trembles at my words.

"Who are you talking to?" I whip around, seeing my dad.

"Oh, I'm just thinking of a poem for school." I say. Why can't he see Jess? He nods, looking at me like I'm crazy before going back into his room. I don't say anything until I hear the click of his door closing.

"Why can no one else see you besides me?" I ask Jess.

"You're one of them." She says, looking at me with approval. I stare at her, extremely confused.

"One of who?" She doesn't answer me, just tilts her head up to the ceiling. She seems like she's under a spell, not comprehending anything that's going on around her.

She snaps her head back towards me. "Thank you for all of your help." She narrows her eyes, studying me. "Go check on Jamie."

"Wait, what do you mean by I'm one of them? One of who?" I ask, desperate for some answers.

"Remember to stray from the path paved for you." Before I can reply, she disappears, leaving me confused and alone.
