Part 2: What Kind of Surprise?

Finally Friday. Things have been pretty quiet at school, which was a nice change. Mr. Hendricks only called me into his office once this week, and we haven’t heard from Volto in quite a while. The guys and I have been cruising through our routine, and this little piece of quiet had been almost like a vacation.

Except for today. Today the boys were acting weird. That was the only word I could think of to describe it. They knew something that they weren’t telling me. While I was used to that, this was different. I caught Luke looking at me, and he just gave me this goofy grin and looked away. All of the guys were whispering to one another at one time or another and the conversation would stop as soon as I got close. Weird. Just weird.

I met up with Nathan and Gabriel outside of the girls’ locker room after class. Nathan grabbed my violin case, and Gabriel grabbed my bookbag and then my hand. As we walked out towards Kota’s car, I asked what the plans were for the weekend. I thought about it while I was changing after gym class, and I realized that we hadn’t really talked about plans for this weekend. We usually have the whole weekend planned long before now.

Nathan and Gabriel looked at each other, and Nathan cleared his throat. “Well, Peanut… I need to do some stuff right after school, but I’ll be over later.”

“Oy! No worries, Trouble. I’ll keep you company tonight!” He squeezed my hand. “I’m pretty sure that North, Silas, and Luke are working at the diner tomorrow, but I’m sure we’ll figure out something.”  We got to Kota’s car, and he was already in the driver’s seat with the engine running. Gabriel opened the passenger door, and I climbed in.

I smiled at Kota. “Are you in a hurry? We could have rushed.”

He looked surprised at my comment. “Well… um… a little. Nathan and I have a few things to do, but, no, I’m not in a big hurry. Not really.” Did he sound nervous? Still more weird.

The drive to our street was pretty quiet. The guys seemed distracted for some reason. Was something going on?

“Is everything ok? You guys have been acting weird all day.”

Kota looked in the rearview mirror at Nathan, then glanced at me. “Everything is fine. Just… it’s just some Academy stuff. Nothing to worry about. It’s just something we need to get done right away.”
