The first act went by in a blur of lights and sounds and emotions. I’d never been to a play before, and my boys… my boys took me to this amazing piece of artistry. We laughed. I cried a little. I clutched poor Victor’s hand the entire time, squeezing it until I was sure his fingers were numb. As Elphie soared above the stage as the last strains of Defying Gravity echoed through the theater, I realized that, at some point, I had also grabbed hold of Mr. Blackbourne’s hand. Our fingers were laced together, and I held on for dear life.
The house lights came up, and I blinked from how bright they were. Luke stood and turned around, finding me with his eyes and his grin. “So, Sweetie… how’d we do? Are you surprised?”
I stood, reaching over the seat to hug him. “This is amazing! Yes, I’m surprised. How? Why?”
Gabriel pulled me from Luke and hugged me. “How? We bought tickets. Why? Because we wanted to see your face light up in wonder… just like it is. Right. Now.” He punctuated each of the last words with a poke to the end of my nose. “Just to make you happy, Trouble.” I hugged him as tight as I could, my face burrowing into his neck for a moment. I released him, and turned to the guys behind me.
“How are you guys doing back there?” I smiled at them. Of all the guys, those three would be the ones I would not peg as theater patrons. They all spoke at once.
“Fiyero is a putz.” “Glinda is an airhead.” “Isn’t the green girl supposed to be evil or something?”
I laughed. My heart was soaring higher than Elphaba as she escaped the Wizard. Dr. Green not being there was the only thing that kept this from being perfect. It was close, though.
After a quick trip to the restroom, with escort, of course, we settled into our seats for Act II. The guys were bantering back and forth, and I just sat there, soaking it all in. I noticed Mr. Blackbourne reaching into his suit coat pocket, pulling out a slip of paper. He handed it to me.
“Miss Sorenson, Dr. Green asked me to give this to you after the performance this evening. However, knowing the score of the show, it might mean more if you have it before the second Act begins.”
Puzzled, I look down and read Sean’s not-very-doctor-like handwriting:
I believe I have been changed for the better.
Yours,
Sean
I looked up at Mr. Blackbourne, even more confused than before I read the note. He patted my leg, resting his hand on my knee. “It will make sense in the end, Miss Sorenson. It will make perfect sense.”
The lights dimmed, and Act II began. Much darker, almost scary at times. I still hung on every word, every note. I was mesmerized once again. Emotions swirled all through me. It was such a breathtaking experience.
