Katie

I walked past the notice board. There was a new poster hung up. It said something about a winter dance next week. I was looking at it when my friends came up behind me. "What do you guys think? We could all go together," Amber proposed. "Unless someone asks you of course," Julie said to me, looking at something behind me. I turned and blushed when I saw it was Travis. She grinned at my reddening cheeks and I glared at her. "Oh come on Katie you two obviously like each other. Why won't you just admit it?" "There is no way Travis likes me," I told them. "You're not denying that you like him though," Amber said. I blushed some more. My silence was enough for them. "I told you she'd admit it," Eve grinned.

Whoosh

I was taking out my history books when someone sat down next to me. I expected it to be Travis, since none of my friends were in this class with me which gave him time to annoy me. "Hey Katie, can I ask you something?" I turned to see Brian. "Sure," I said. "I was wondering if you'd like to go to the dance with me." He looked really nervous. "Of course." I smiled. Brian was a great guy. I was sure I'd have a good time with him at the dance. But he's not Travis. I told myself that was exactly the point. Whatever I was feeling for Travis, I needed to get rid of it.

Brian got up again and went to sit on his usual spot, next to his friends. Meanwhile Travis had also arrived and now took the seat next to me. He was frowning in Brian's direction. "What did he want?" he asked. I shrugged. "Nothing. He asked me to the dance, that's all." "Oh, and what did you say?" "I said yes. What about you? Are you going with someone?" He thought a moment and then shook his head. "No, I wouldn't want my date to be left alone while I'm off making people look stupid." He grinned, but it seemed forced somehow. I didn't ask him about it though. It was not like he'd actually tell me the truth.

History was boring as ever. I was pulled out of my daze by a wad of paper hitting me on the side of my head. I glared at Travis but he wasn't looking in my direction. He was paying attention to what the teacher was saying. At least, that was what it looked like. As soon as I'd turned my head again a new wad hit me. I ignored it this time, but that only resulted in the next one following soon after. I kicked Travis under the table. "What was that for?" he asked, feigning innocence. Two could play at that game. "What was what for?" I retorted. He grinned. "Never mind." He turned his attention back to the front and I expected another wad of paper, but I heard a fart noise instead. And it somehow came from my direction. The people in front of us turned their heads. I blushed and glared at Travis. He was suddenly very interested in the wall next to him. I took one of his wads and threw it at his head. "Why did you do that Katie-Kat?" Before I could sneer at him, the teacher turned to us. "Katie, Travis, please stop talking during my class." We both looked at our books, like the attentive students we were. But as soon as she turned her back, another fart noise sounded. She didn't hear, thank Demeter, but half the students did. I blushed and covered my face with my hands. I still heard the snickers though, and miss Johnson did too. She looked at the class suspiciously, but then went back to what she was saying. "Don't worry Katie-Kat, we've all been there," Travis said, rubbing my back in fake sympathy. I kicked him harder this time. He flinched, but didn't say anything about it. I raised my head again, trying to listen to at least a little bit to the lesson.

I got another wad against my head. "Stoll stop it," I said, but it came out way louder than I'd intended. Our teacher turned around again. "That's enough. Katie, Travis, you've both got detention after school" She was not in a good mood today. "But-" she cut me off before I could protest. "No buts," she said, right when another fart-noise sounded. This time it came from her direction. I snorted, which didn't help my case at all, but we already got detention so it couldn't get much worse. Besides, everyone was failing to conceal their laughter, making miss Johnson way angrier. "Who did that?" she demanded. "I'm pretty sure that was you m'am," a voice said from somewhere. It sounded like Travis, but was coming from a completely different direction. His answer made everyone laugh even more. Miss Johnson's usual scowl got worse. "Quiet!" When the hubbub calmed down, she turned back to the board and continued her lesson.

Little whoosh to after the class

"Katie what the hell did you do during history?" Amber wanted to know when we were walking to our next class. How did she find out already? I buried my face in my hands. "Please tell me this isn't about the farts?" "It isn't. Wait what?" "Nothing," I quickly said. Thank the gods. I scolded myself for trying to guess. "What were you talking about exactly?" I asked Amber. "Apparently Brian asked you to the dance and you said yes. Why would you do that?" I shrugged. "He's a great guy. Besides, Travis wasn't going to ask me anyway." "Not if you only give him half a day! Katie I love you, but you can be really stupid sometimes. Especially when it has to do with that boy," she said. "I'm not stupid," I protested. "Oh come on you know I'm right." "Fine, you're right. And that's exactly why I have to find a way to get rid of these feelings." "You can't simply get rid of them. That's not how it works. You have to at least tell him." Yes, like that's ever gonna happen. "No I don't. I can just ignore my feelings and pray they'll go away eventually." I hoped Aphrodite would take pity on me and do something about them. Amber rolled her eyes. "You know as well as I do that they aren't going to disappear. You're acting way to crazy for that." "I'm not crazy!" Amber sent me a knowing glance. I sighed. "Okay fine, maybe I am."

Travis

I was putting away my books when Sabrina came to my table. Great, what did she want now? "Hey Trav, so I was wondering why you hadn't asked me to the dance yet, but then I figured you probably just forgot. So here I am to remind you. Isn't that great?" "No, I didn't forget. I just wasn't going to ask you." I swung my backpack over my shoulder and left, but she wasn't giving up easily and followed me outside. "Oh I get it. You want me to ask you. How stupid of me that I didn't think about that. Travis, do you want to go to the dance with me?" Wait, did she really think that was the reason I said no? Was she really that pretentious? "Who the asking did wasn't the problem. I'm simply not interested in going with you," I told her to be clear. I had been considering asking Katie, but that plan was off the table after history. I should have known she'd rather go with someone else. So the only thing left for me to do was to distract myself from her. But that didn't mean I was going to spend the whole night with the annoying girl in front of me. I wasn't that desperate. Apparently Sabrina was. "You don't have to play hard to get you know. I already like you, it's not necessary." I rolled my eyes. What was so hard to understand for her? "I'm not playing hard too get, I just don't like you. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get to class." "It's lunch time!" "In that case I have to get to lunch." I hoped she'd walk away but it looked like she still wasn't giving up. "Who are you going with then?" "I don't care as long as it's not with you." I walked away and this time she didn't follow.
