It's been three days and the President still hasn't shown up at school. Hannah tries not to worry as she sits down to dinner with her family. Her mother notices the tension while Barry passes out dinner and promptly questions it.
"What's wrong, Hannah?" Joanna asks, expressing deep concern. Hannah's pain also pains her mother, as she looks upset.
"Oh, it's nothing, you know how that time of the month can be," Hannah tries to joke, but is overshadowed by her own negative emotions.
"Oh, well if there's anything I can do to help, please tell me," Joanna does her best to support her daughter.
"Of course," Hannah replies, starting to eat alongside her brother and father.
Ten minutes later, Dave's phone dings. It must be the Felville breaking news app since that's the only app he allows notifications from. He opens his phone, checking the news.
"Dave, how many times have I told you that it's rude to use your phone at the dinner table?" Joanna scolds, but to no avail. He just grunts in response as he reads the report. Joanna huffs in defeat.
"Wait, this is big news," Dave's eyes widen. "Listen to this, 'Eric and Maria Alvarez return home from business trip to find Student Council President daughter Camila dead in backyard shed; apparent heroin overdose. Vice President Victoria King to take President role immediately.'"
Hannah's stomach drops. Her ears start ringing violently and her brain can't seem to work. She hears her mother's voice fade away.
"What a shame, poor thing..." is all she hears before it becomes only ringing.
"Excuse me," is all Hannah can say before getting up and heading for the upstairs bathroom, holding back tears. She locks the door behind her, lets her knees give out, and falls to the floor, letting the tears come out. She crawls to the toilet and pukes up her dinner. She falls back onto the floor, laying down and crying. She bites down on her finger, stifling a sob. She keeps sobbing silently until she hears a knock on the door.
"Hannah?" she hears Danny's voice through the door but decides to ignore him. "Han?" he tries to get her attention, and she can hear the worry in his voice. "Han, please open the door," he cries out almost desperately, trying to turn the knob. He pushes as hard as he can and breaks the lock on the door. He rushes into the bathroom to see Hannah laying on the floor, sobbing silently. "Hannah," he gasps out, rushing to help her sit up. He wraps his arm around her and props them up against the nearest wall. She buries her head into his shoulder, and continues sobbing as she wraps both her arms around his neck. He uses his other hand to stroke her hair to try and get her to calm down. When she regains some of her composure, he tries to talk to her.
"Were you and the President close?" he asks her.
"Not really," she sniffles, separating herself from him. "But we... you know," she implies, wiping her eyes.
"Oh. Did you know about her problem?" he asks.
"I walked in on her at a party I went to. She promised me she would get clean," she says, tears welling up again, but she holds it back.
"How many times did you guys-," he starts.
"Just the once. At the party. We never spoke again after that," she cut him off.
"Oh," he replied, clearly not knowing what to say.
"You probably think I'm crazy for caring so much," she sighed.
"No! I don't think you're crazy. Being with someone like that is... the closest you can be with them, even if it only happens once. It forms a kind of bond, y'know? I don't really know how to explain it, but I don't think you're crazy," he reassures her.
