Henry Wright, formerly Headmaster Henry Wright, packs up his belongings with a heavy heart. He picks up a picture from his desk and looks at it. It brings out an emotion he had locked away in the back of his mind, which he hoped would never come out again. As he looks at the image of himself and Jennifer King opening Felville Academy for the first time, he finally sheds a tear. Then two. Then three. Then he falls to the floor, sobbing for the first time in seventeen years.
"I'm sorry, my love," he sobs as he looks at the dreaded picture. He holds it close for a few moments before regaining his composure. He carefully puts the picture into a box and sits at his desk, head in hands, recalling his most cherished memory from seven years ago.
"Let's run away together," Jennifer sat up in Henry's bed, looking him dead in the eye.
"What about Victor?" Henry asked, sitting up as well.
"He'd never be able to find us," Jennifer started. "Besides, why should he care? He has a child with another woman. He and I have been over for years," she explained, smiling her golden smile that no one could resist.
"I love you, Jennifer," Henry confessed. "Victor doesn't love you. You shouldn't be with him. But Harold. He needs a mother," the feeling of sorrow overtook his heart, realizing that the two of them could never be together.
"We could take him with us. We could be a family," Jennifer suggested, taking his face into her hands. "Please," she begged. "I can't live with that rat bastard anymore," her tears began streaming down her face as she realized how hopeless she was.
"Okay," Henry agreed, taking her hands into his own. "We'll take Harold and get away from this godforsaken town," he held her close, letting her sob into his shoulder.
Two days later, she ran off and filed for divorce without him, and without her son. But, he never stopped loving her. He sent her a letter promising to take care of the school she cherished, and his heart broke knowing that he couldn't keep it.
"I'm sorry I broke my promise," he says to himself. "I'm sorry I failed you," he whispers, putting his head down on his desk. After a few moments, his brooding is interrupted by a knock on the door, causing him to bring his head back up. "Come in," he almost groans, not wanting to talk to anyone. Upon his permission to enter, President King walks into the office.
"Hey," she stands at the door, hands in her pockets.
"You've got a lot of nerve," he grumbles, not making eye contact.
"If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that," she offers a smile, clearly shallow. It almost seems like someone made her come here to talk to him.
"Is there something I can help you with?" he asks, a sharp tone to his voice.
"Well, you're not the Headmaster anymore, so no," she chuckles. He frowns deeply, getting angrier and angrier every second she remains in his office. "Too soon?" from Henry's angle, it almost looks like she's smirking, flaunting her victory over him.
"Fuck you," he mumbles, feeling bad for talking to a student like that.
"Well, I would, but I don't really see what I can get out of you," she chuckles again. "Listen, I didn't come here to rub anything in. That's not my style. I'm here to apologize. For ruining your career. Sorry," she struggles to make an apology, clearly having never apologized to anyone before in her life.
"Who made you come here?" he asked, not buying the remorseful act.
"Man, was it that obvious? I guess there are some things you just can't fake. Secretary Matthews was telling me to come talk to you. And as I had predicted, it was a total bust. See you around, Henry," she turns around and exits his office, leaving him alone once more.
