"Be careful! You're only two weeks out of the hospital, are you trying to reopen your wounds?" I yell across the driveway. Jamie's examining the campervan.
"I know, Aryn!" she calls back. I walk casually over.
"So what has you so interested?"
"This thing." She slaps the side of it. "It's an excellent machine, kind of old, but still good. It's a class B mobile home." She notices my blank stare and sighs. "Class B's are like vans but bigger. Class A's are really large and square, like buses. They're good for large families. C's look like B's but with a bunk over the windshield. Do you understand now?"
"How do you know all this?" I snicker.
She shrugs. "It interested me, so I learned about it. I could also tell you about different types of trailers."
"That won't be necessary."
"Dang." Jamie thinks for a moment. "When this breaks down we're getting a pickup truck - preferably a hybrid or electric - and a trailer."
"Why a pickup truck?"
"I just like pickup trucks."
"You are such a stereotypical lesbian," I laugh. Jamie grins, spins around, grabs my collar, and plants a solid kiss on my lips that turns me bright red.
"You aren't wrong. Have you finished packing?"
"Y-yeah," I say breathily.
"Great. I already did the thing with transferring their money to our accounts, and let me tell you this: they were loaded. Though Jacob had more money in his than Carrie, which honestly surprised me."
"It doesn't surprise me. Carrie seemed like the leader, but honestly Jacob was just way more dominant in every aspect of life I saw him in."
Jamie wiggles her eyebrows and I scowl at her. "Sorry, sorry. I know, no jokes about that stuff." She raises her hands in surrender.
"That's alright."
"Good."
I walk back inside to get the suitcases. We're bringing enough to stock a small army, and not even a quarter is in our four suitcases - most of the clothes are going directly into the campervan's closets. As it is not a large area Jamie and I will be sharing both a closet and a bed, which makes me blush just thinking about it.
We did go through Jacob's and Carrie's closets, and surprisingly enough Carrie and Jamie shared a lot of the same fashion taste. Her suitcases are packed full of leather jackets, jeans, belts and scabbards for various weapons, a black trench coat she insisted on bringing, and several pairs of fishnet tights I bet her she couldn't fight in. Though that bet may have had ulterior motives behind it.
Essentially she's going to look like she's in costume. Which, I think, might be the look she's going for. Jamie was not particularly pleased that my closet was so normal, and I think there may be some shopping in my future.
-
I get into the driver's seat, Jamie's in the passenger side.
"Are you sure I can't drive?"
"You don't have a license. I don't even think you know how."
"Ugh, I hate that you're right..." she groans.
"How about this. Take an online course, and then we can go and get you a license. You will definitely need it anyway."
"To drive your car every so often?"
"Yeah." My car is currently trailing the campervan, Jamie somehow managed to attach a trailer connector to the front. Still don't know how she managed to do that, but since when do I know how she got any of this knowledge?
"So what's our plan?" I ask Jamie. "Just wandering, sightseeing?"
"No," she replies. "I... have a plan, but I'm not sure you're going to like it."
"I don't think I understand."
She hums a note. "The people that killed my family are dead, but I still harbor a grudge for the organization as a whole. I think, with my sheer power, and your common sense and rational decision-making ability, we have a decent shot at at least taking down some of them."
I roll my eyes and mutter, "Because God knows only one of us has access to any of that."
Jamie laughs but her face quickly turns intensely serious.
"If you're with me, then...
I don't think I can rest until we've either destroyed them, or died."
And so the first book ends. An end, but perhaps... also a beginning? We'll have to see...
