CHAPTER THIRTY

~America's POV~

After my exciting practice with Russia, I went home, ate dinner, and went straight to my room for bed.

Well, that's what my parents thought that I was doing. In reality, I was getting ready to go to karaoke with Japan.

I couldn't wait to tell Japan what had happened today and get her opinion. I hadn't seen her all week, so when she contacted me yesterday via my expired detention slip to come with her to karaoke, I gladly accepted. Now I was just waiting for her to pick me up.

If I was completely honest, I hadn't been expecting Russia to accept my proposition, but I was overjoyed. I felt that I was finally getting him to open up, after what had seemed to be eons of trying to get past his guard. I don't think that I had seen all of him yet, but when he laughed like that today-- it gave me hope.

I had never seen him laugh like that before, so raw and free. I also felt partially proud, like I had made him feel safe.

I heard a car rush past in the distance, and snapped out of my thoughts to check the time on my alarm clock. 10:30. I peered underneath the cracks in my door to find the hallway dark, silent. I breathed a sigh of relief. Normally my parents went to bed around 10, so if the hallway was silent, that was a pretty clear indication that they were gone.

I strolled over to my window, hoisting it up and tossing the ladder out. The snow below had mostly melted. I shut off my lights and stuffed pillows underneath my blanket, before drawing my curtains in front of my window so that if they did come in, it wouldn't be apparent that I was gone.

I glanced again around the dark room and for added measure, mentally flipped my father off for taking my money. I was done following orders, done doing what he wanted, and done being a puppet. Now that I had hung out with Russia and it had gone so well after Britain told me to stay away for so long, I knew that friendship didn't come easy, and that I had to work on it to make it come true. Maybe if he just tried to work on his friendship with Soviet, they could try to start over. Russia and I had certainly gotten off to a rough start after all, but look where we were now.

I smiled fondly at the memory of today. Something about today was magical, enchanting, unbelievable, and I loved everything about it. I felt like I could do anything now, like I was on top of the world.

Cold air filtered through my room and I grimaced, hoping that it wouldn't make the house too drafty. With a small backward glance, I clambered out of the window and pulled it down a bit further so the only crack was where the ladder came through, and climbed down until my boots touched the ground.

I stood up and gazed wistfully at the darkened barn, wishing that I could take Ember on a ride, but if I went into the barn now, it would cause all the horses to wake up. And if all the horses would wake up, Britain surely would too. I sighed and darted out to the side of the house, promising that I would ride her Saturday.

I raced to the curb, two blocks from the house as Japan and I had planned, and settled myself on the edge of the curb, waiting for her to come. I had missed her so much, even though we hadn't seen each other for five days.

At that moment, a hot pink sports car rolled up to the curb and I smiled, knowing that it was Japan. I stood up as she rolled down the window, grinning back at me. "Get in loser, we're going shopping," she laughed and I shook my head, grinning along with her.

I opened the door and swung my body inside before closing the door behind me. "As long as we're not actually going shopping," I warned, remembering our eventful Target trip.
