New Cali — 2204

"Aaaleeex!"

Alex groaned beneath her blankets.

"If you don't get up, remember—someone's going to make the money you said you'd pay me back with."

The voice came from the answering machine beside her bed.

Alex opened one eye.

"Ugh..."

She threw the covers off.

The blanket immediately disappeared upward, sucked into the automated storage netting built into the ceiling.

"Stupid bed."

She sat up, reached for the bong beside her, and took a long pull.

"Now that's better."

Alex rubbed her eyes and stared at the clock.

She had slept through half the morning.

An hour later, freshly showered, Alex stood in front of her closet while music played throughout her apartment. She took her time getting dressed, stopping halfway through to grab a snack.

Once she was ready, she dropped into her favorite chair—the soft, oversized seat she jokingly called her stoner throne.

She picked up her phone.

"Okay. Let's see who else thought about me today."

Messages appeared across the screen.

Then she stopped.

One name made her stomach tighten.

Granddad.

"What does he want?"

Alex stared at the message.

The last time she'd seen her grandfather, she had been seven years old.

She still remembered her mother screaming at him.

She remembered the door slamming.

And she remembered the strange thing he'd said before he left.

The rock never lies.

Alex had never understood what it meant.

She opened the message.

A recording began playing.

"Hey, Alex. It's me. Your granddad."

Alex leaned back.

"He'd spoken with your mother," the recording continued. "She told me about some of the problems you've been having. I've recently come across a little money, and I thought maybe it was time I caught up with my granddaughter."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"A little money?"

The recording continued.

"I'd like you to come visit me. Here's my address. I hope to see you soon."

The message ended.

Alex stared at the screen.

Then another line appeared.

P.S.

She frowned.

"Why do people put P.S.? Why don't they just keep writing?"

She tossed the phone onto the chair.

"Whatever."
