Chapter 42

Martin takes the truck so I can go with Erin in her car
"Let me drive" I say noticing she looks a little upset and she nods
"Is it ok if I take a nap on the way home I'm pretty tired" she says and I nod
"How about we go out or something you know my treat well after the police station" I say and she smiles
"That sounds good" she says then turns over to face the window as I scramble for my phone which just started ringing
"Hey where are you?" Jo asks when I pick up
"I'm with Erin on the way back from the city" I say
"Oh right sorry but I needed to tell you you should call your dad sometime soon" she says and I frown
"Why would I call my dad?" I ask
"Just do it ok" she says and I sigh
"Ok I'll call you later" I say
"Bye" she says then hangs up

I go and give my statement while erin still dozes in the car
"You ok ace?" Jo's dad asks and I nod
"Can I see her?" I ask and I know it's probably a bad move but I just need her to understand
"No,I know you probably want to try and make her see what she did but she's not good for you" he says and I sigh
"I know but the funny thing is after everything I still feel attached to her in some twisted way" I say and he nods
"It'll mostly pass" he says
"Is there anything else you need?" I ask and he shakes his head
"Only for you to take it easy" he says and I smile
"Yeah" I say before leaving

"Hey Erin wake up we're here" I say softly and she stirs then wakes up
"Hey" she says then I turn the car off
"So how'd you sleep?" I ask as we walk inside
"Not bad" she says and I smile
"Well that's Good" I say
"I hope they have ice coffee ready" she says and I laugh
"I'm sure they do,this is where all the gay people in this town come after all" I say jokingly then see 2 familiar faces
"Oh hey guys" I say to Luca and Jackson
"Ace, Erin what are you doing here?" Jackson asks and I shrug
"It's all good dude anyway we came to get drinks" I say and Erin nods
"He asked me out after me and you talked" Luca says to her and she nods again
"Interesting, to be honest I thought he was a chicken" I say and Jackson sticks his tongue out at me

I pull over and me and Erin crawl into the backseat so we have more room to talk
"You know it never really hit me until I was driving to the game that I really could've died" she says after taking a sip of her coffee
"Yeah I was so full of adrenaline I didn't even realize what I was doing until I was already there" I say
"I'm glad you did though but like how'd you even get in the doors were locked?" She asks and I smirk
"I climbed through an open window" I say and she smiles
"The bathroom window?" She asks and I nod
"I'm honestly surprised at how quiet I was about it too" I say because given how frantic I was to get to her I would've thought I would've made some noise
"I love you" she says and I feel my face get hot
"I love you too Erin" I say

She doesn't want to spend the night in her house alone since her parents couldn't get a flight back until tomorrow so I drive us back to my house
"Hey you two" Kate says as we get inside
"Why is everyone so chill about this" Erin says
"Well we don't want to freak you 2 out but I just wanted to say you two deserve to take it easy and also the principle wants to talk to both of you tomorrow at school especially you ace since you ran out of class into a potentially deadly situation" Kate says and I ruffle a hand through my hair
"To be fair it was less deadly because I got there" I say pulling Erin closer and she sighs
"I'm just glad you're ok" she says coming up then gives us both a hug

I finally get the nerve to make the call now that I'm alone so I take out my phone and dial the familiar yet unfamiliar number,it rings a couple times before the click of someone answering
"Hey dad"
