Chapter 6: TALKS

"I heard they killed her entire family," Sandra explains to Laila as they weed the ground.

"Oh, gods! That is horrible!"

It's been a few weeks since the women had planted their strawberries, and the news about the fallen kingdom of Laine has spread like wildfire. Laila stops what she's doing, staring at the ground. She can't believe she disliked someone she never met because the king was attracted to her. Now her entire family is gone because of a war, and to make matters worse, she was there, the day the Resistance invaded.

Laila has never really enjoyed the love, warmth, and comfort of a family since her mother 'died' when she was young. She's been called a bastard all her life, as her father's whereabouts have never been known. But Saya is someone who had at least, a relationship with her family, snatching that away from her is completely unfair and unforgivable.

"Yeah, King Xerxes brought all the survivors back to his kingdom under 'special treatment.'"

"Really?!" Laila can't believe her ears! King Xerxes of Moore? The battle beast? The man with no heart? The breaker of necks? He did that for Princess Saya?

"Yes, they say she's the only one he pays attention to, between his two women."

She furrows her eyebrows in confusion, she thought Princess Saya makes the king's women three?

"Ah! You mustn't have heard," Sandra says, sensing her confusion.

"Heard what?"

"He sent his first woman packing. I think it's been over a month now."

Laila's eyes widen and she drops her tool, now taking a seat on the floor. This is too much information! Is this what happens when you're madly in love with someone? You completely detach yourself from everything that does not affect the owner of your heart.

"What happened?" she asks her friend, after recovering from her shock.

"She got pregnant."

Laila winces...she's heard that King Xerxes does not want children.

"I actually liked Cordelia. She was nice to me," she mutters to herself.

"But that doesn't make sense, because there are rumors that Princess Saya is pregnant too"

"WHAT?!" Sandra chuckles as her friend's reaction is priceless. Why are her eyes so wide?

"So if Princess Saya is actually pregnant, but he sent Cordelia away after she got pregnant...that means..."

"He didn't want Cordelia's baby but he wanted Saya's?" Sandra asks, trying to piece it together.

"No...King Xerxes is a scary man, but I know he is not one to throw away his responsibility," Laila replies.

Gasping out loud, what could have actually happened dawns on her.

"What is it, My Lady?"

"She committed treason," she mutters under her breath, almost not believing it herself! Cordelia slept with another man and got pregnant?!

Her maid gasps, covering her mouth, upon hearing this...that is the only possibility which could explain King Xerxes, turning away a pregnant woman!

Laila shakes her head, getting back to work, "This is none of our business, thinking about it, makes it seem like I'm meddling in affairs that aren't mine."

Sandra nods in understanding, getting back to work, as well. A few hours in, the women wash their rubber boots and gather their things to head inside, but the sound of men training gets their attention.
