VALERIE SMITH was Hawkins' popular girl, she was born into a rich family and had her looks and smarts, which quickly got her to the top of the popularity link. And things like that become quickly unimportant the moment when Steve "the hair" Harrington comes to her, looking for help in the fall of 1984.
He wanted to get Nancy back, but when they try and do that, Dustin Henderson stops them, it ends with them going down this whirlpool of taking care of him and his three friends, Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair and Max Mayfield.
The things that Valerie Smith discovers that fall, causes her and Steve to become closer to the point that they're basically best friends. Everyone began assuming that they were dating when they were just friends who happened to be there for one another in times when they both really needed it the most.
And when summer comes, Valerie gets to relax and enjoy the summer before her Senior year begins while she helps Steve work through his college applications and receiving the replies. (They weren't good responses.) And while he works his summer job, she shows up pretty much everyday. Why? Because he has a really cute co-worker named Robin Buckley.
