Chapter 10: Christmas as a child( Emma's POV)

I always wondered for many years what Emery was like. Mom said she had raised the remainder of us because dad and Emery died in a fire. I was not entirely sure what that meant.

I do remember though what Christmas was when we were kids.

"Emery come on! Santa came! Santa came! Let's go open the presents."

"But mom will be mad at us if we don't wait. We should wait Emma."

So our order went Emery was the oldest and Luella was the second oldest of us all then there was me, Emma, then Sarah, Charlotte, the youngest is our brother Kalen.

I just remember I was only 3 at the time Emery left with dad. I believed she was trying to just leave me and have me deal with mom. Many of us were 2 and a half years apart from each other.

Then I met Alex and well I felt like I finally could breathe not having my mother against me.

She always wanted us pressured as we reached 18 to be married quickly sometimes even 16. She wanted us to meet a suitor whom she selected was more appropriate for us than anyone else.

"Emma you are at the age to marry so tonight let's go through our order. You will meet each suitor tonight who is worthy for your hand and then we will make wedding preparations for the one you settle on."

"Why can't I just find my guy mother? I don't want to be paired up with anyone. I want to love them."

"Your grandmother did this for me and that is how I met your father. So if you aren't pleased with my choices then you can no longer be in the family.

You must also follow my rules to go through with anything. Now you better not sass me like that again! Do we understand?"

"Yes, mother!"

My car broke down and there he was. I was to be engaged to this random suitor soon enough and I met Alex.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah it's just my car broke down and I don't seem to know how to fix it."

"Well, then I am glad I came to the rescue then. Alright, it seems your battery died so you will need to jump-start it. May I?"

"Of course!"

I watched him do a few things and pretty soon the car was fixed. I saw his amazing brown hair as nicely down and eyes hazelnut almost as green as a forest.
I blushed a little bit.

Well, that relationship didn't last long as I had to break it up by force and of course, I manipulated him. I didn't mean to though.

I was kicked out of the family when my mother heard the news of my actions. I was to have a suitor so I wouldn't make any more bad choices and to be kept in check. When I told Alex what all had happened we dumped.

Then he met Emery and now he thinks the world of her. I don't blame him for wanting my older sister. She is beautiful in every way and she is humble intelligent and better for him. He straight up is planning how to propose to her.

"Emma, I need that news article due tomorrow," Jaden said.

"Alright!" Emma said and works on her story.

She later gets a call from her mother.

"Emma! As soon as you are done with work come home and I am sure you would love your new suitor to meet."

"Yes, mother!" She tells her mom.

When I arrived home the suitor was there and I was not fond of him at all. Feeling more excited about Alex's plans for Emery I wanted to see if he needed help which he insisted he didn't.

I would get married just not when I am rushed though.

Emma's car breaks down and her son passed away from the cold and she buried him.

With my son gone I felt more sorrow than ever.

I decided for Thanksgiving it would be better to do it alone. Emery wouldn't want me or the rest of the family and if I were to find a guy who is worthy of my affection then that would have to wait.

So what makes me happy? My sister finding someone who really will protect her and if she eloped I wouldn't be bothered by that because the mother needs to know it's more than a suitor to find love.

The phone rings.

"Hello?"
"Miss Warner?"
"Yes?"
"Hi I am Cody from work and I am calling for two things. 1 congrats on having your article published.
2. Do you have any plans tonight?"

"Hold up my article published?! Are you serious?! That is the best thing that has happened to me!" She said and squeals.

"I mean that is great! And no I don't have plans tonight."

"Great! Would you like to go dancing with me and attend a fall festival?"

"Oh, that would be wonderful! Of course!"

"Great I recommend dressing semi-formal because we will go to a festival afterward and there is a lot of food there."

"Alright!"

"Can I give you a ride?"

"That would be very helpful! Because my car is in the shop."

"Awesome!!: So I will swing by to pick you up at 6."

"Sounds good!"

*I am so excited! I haven't been on a date in a long time. Cody is a nice guy I mean I work with him and he did insist on taking some courage to ask me. I feel so awkward though it's hard for me to talk to people.*

I was looking through my closet to see what I had and not much. So I called my best friend.

"Ciara, you are a fashion designer right?"
"That is correct. Is my best friend in need of a dress?"
"Yes, I don't know what to wear for my date."
"I have just the one. I'll be there in 2 minutes."
"Thank you so much you are a lifesaver."

It doesn't hurt to try dating again. Does it?
