Chapter Three

“Please, Jane, I really need this job!” I cried to the LaWouski Taco House boss. She was my old boss, and she was probably the meanest, cruelest person to have ever existed. When I used to work at LaWouski, she’d pulverise me and try to make an excuse to fire me. But then, I quit myself, which made her so happy that literally when I packed my bags, she squealed, jumping up and down.

“I’m sorry Vicky,” Jane declared, pointing her nose up and stalking away from me. I ignored her forgetting my name, again, and waited to hear the rest. “But I already hired someone else.”

My eyes burned in anger.

“Who? You know I was an amazing worker here! Please?” I pleaded, giving her my puppy dog eyes. A normal person never backed away with those eyes, but Jane was like Lady Tremaine, or worst.

“That is confidential information, especially since you don’t work here anymore. Now, you either buy something or leave.” Jane instructed. I frowned. Confidential? What was so confidential about finding out who worked at LaWouski? It’s not like I was going to stalk them or something! I didn’t even have the time to do that! And unless this person was a man, and super good looking, then no, I wouldn’t stalk them!

Jane pushed me out of the ‘Staff Room’ and hurdled me to the fully filled up customers lounge. LaWouski was almost like a bar, except for teens. They didn’t sell any alcohol, but from being a staff for a year, I knew kids snuck in their own, and Jane couldn’t care less about it.

“Woops, looks like the restaurant is full.” Jane shrugged, hiding her smile. “Looks like you’ll be heading home now.”

She did one final tug before leaving me outside of LaWouski in that smoky, downtown air that I hated ever since I was young. But I couldn’t do anything about it; my parents loved the city, and the country side to them was just lonely and disgusting. I personally preferred the nice, quiet area, rather than the busy streets all day.

“Ugh!” I grumbled to myself. Ever since talking to Hannah about the Box Beauty Pageant, I knew I was screwed. She dropped by my house, which, by the way, caused many complications because I had to explain why my parents weren’t home, and why they suddenly changed from ‘following my back everywhere’ to ‘not so caring anymore’, a brochure on the Box Beauty Pageant. It was just the basic rules and guidelines of auditioning, and even if I was pretty and had the perfect body shape (which I didn’t have), I might not even get it. That’s how tough the competition was, and with my body, I would never make it.

Hannah told me that I was beautiful and was great with crowds, but I didn’t believe her. I wasn’t good with crowds, and I sucked at being on stage.

So, I decided it was about time that I tried for my LaWouski job again. Unfortunately, someone beat me to my old job, which sucked crap.

I stalked down Queen’s Street, flinging my legs for every step I took. I ignored the fact that I was being a fool and an idiot at the same time, and continued walking. It wasn’t my best day today, especially when I knew my life was ruined. Or, you could say my parent’s life is ruined. But if their life was ruined, it kind of meant mine was too.

If only I did actually have what it takes to be in the Pageant. Then, my family could have a higher chance of being saved. And I wouldn’t have to worry so much! The pain of having to be awake all night was more than painful. Deep down it hurt so much, and by the time it’s morning, that’s when your eyes tell you that it’s time to sleep.
