The last summer was...good. At first.Luca and Alberto were happy to see each other, they spent almost every minute together. Luca taught Alberto about stars and how to paint, Alberto showed Luca what it was like to be a lifeguard and taught him how to make woodcarvings. Giulia was a bit jealous that she wasn't included often, especially since Alberto was now her brother, but she understood.
Everything was perfect.
Until the last week of summer.Luca and Alberto shared the tree house again since there was no spare room, and Giulia was already mad that Alberto got her room while she was away.
Alberto woke up first, which was a surprise because Luca had still been in school mode, so he would always wake up really early.
He decided to just stay with him. It was because he didn't want to lose any time with Luca, but his reasoning was "luca would be scared if he woke up alone".
Alberto wasn't sure how long he'd stay asleep, but to pass the time he flipped through the astronomy book that Luca was explaining to him the night before. Alberto could read, although some words were still hard for him, but he really just wanted to see the drawings of planets and stars.Luca woke up a few minutes later. It took a moment for him to get his eyes adjusted to the sun. He sat up slowly and yawned. It scared him when he noticed Alberto wasn't there, but quickly noticed him sitting on the edge of the hideout. Luca let out a relieved sigh. He sat next to him and looked over his shoulder. Alberto hadn't noticed him yet, he was so focused on the book.
"That's Giulia's favorite." Luca said sleepily, pointing at a picture of Saturn.
"Which ones your favorite?" Alberto asked, turning to face Luca.
"I don't know, yet." He smiled. "What about you?"
"They all look weird. Who decided to make their colors like that?"
Luca giggled and ignored his question. Alberto really didn't want it answered anyway, it was just a joke. He smiled at him.
"Why'd you want to see them anyway?" Luca asked once he stopped laughing.
"I dunno, was the only thing around." He turned back to the book and began to flip the page.
Luca looked over at the sound of paper. He realized what page Alberto was on and quickly took the textbook from him.
"Hey! What was that for?" Alberto wasn't mad, he could never be mad at Luca. But he was confused.
"Uh..heh. Nothing I just..wanted it back?" Luca said nervously.
"Uh-huh. Sure."
Luca fidgeted with the cover and looked away. "Sorry. You can still look through it." He said, handing it back.
Alberto hesitated when taking it and turned to the page he was at before, which took longer to find than he thought it would.
"What's on the next page?" He asked.
Luca rubbed the back of his neck, still avoiding looking at him. "Nothing special."
Alberto flipped to it, and the first thing he noticed was drawings all over the blank spots that were supposed to be filled with notes. Drawings of him. And Vespas.
"I just...missed you. I guess." Luca shrugged.
"Why didn't you want me to see these?" Alberto asked, not looking towards him. A bit jealous since he thought Luca's drawings were better than his, although Luca had reassured him many times before that it wasn't true.
"I thought it was weird. Obsessive, maybe? I still kind of like the idea of running away together, although we have nothing to run from." Luca explained, talking quickly.
Alberto scoffed. "That's cute." He mumbled.
"What?"
"What?" Alberto turned to face Luca.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing." He said nonchalantly. "I was just talked to myself."
"Oh, okay?"
Luca stared at him and opened his mouth to speak when Giulia opened her window.
"Great, you guys are awake. Dad made breakfast, and he needs you for fishing today." She pointed to Alberto.
"Can Luca come with?" He asked, placing down the textbook.
"Why? He didn't come last summer, or any of the times this summer." She said, confused.
"Why can't he come?" He folded his arms.
"Why do you want him to?"
"Because I do."
"That's not a real reason."
"Yeah, it is?"
"No, it's not."
"You can't take him everywhere, he's not a dog."
"1. You can't take dogs everywhere, Luca told me that. 2. You got to hang out with him for nine months, I can hang out with him for three."
"It's already been three. Did you forget? We're going back next week."
"Hey. I'm still here." Luca spoke up. "I don't really want to go with you, Alberto. Fishing is your thing." He said nervously.
"See? Why didn't you just ask him in the first place?"
"You didn't either, Giulia." Alberto scoffed.
"Can we just go eat?" Luca sighed.
"Fine." They said in unison.
