Hortense was taking a pregnancy test. She had taken two already that morning and she wanted to take a third one just to make sure that she really wasn't pregnant. She wanted more kids with her husband Quackmore. She already had one daughter with him. Blaire was two and a half years old and she gave her parents a lot of trouble. Blaire was a daddy's little girl.
She came out of the bathroom with the pregnancy test in her hand. "So, what's the result of this test?" Quackmore said. "Negative again," she said, tossing the pregnancy test on the bed. "I'm sorry," he said. "It's alright. I don't think that I'll be able to have any more babies," she said. "It's alright honey, I love you and Blaire and that's all that matters to me," he said. "I love you too, Quackmore," she said. They looked at the little duckling that was sitting on the bed. "Come here little one," Hortense said to her little girl. Blaire came over to Hortense.
That night, after putting Blaire to bed, they went to the back porch to talk alone by themselves. "I don't know what to do about giving Blaire a brother or a sister," Hortense said. "I don't know either," Quackmore said. "I think we should take a break from trying to have another baby for a little while," she said. "I agree. I think that we're under too much stress from trying," he said. "We are," she said. Hortense stood up and went over to Quackmore to give him a kiss.
"Mommy, mommy," Blaire called from inside. "I'm coming, baby girl," Hortense said and went inside. Hortense went to Blaire's room and got her to go back to sleep for the night. Quackmore helped put Blaire back to bed. He loved his wife and daughter. He wanted to take care of them. Even as much as he fought with Hortense, he still wanted to take care of them.
The next morning, Hortense woke up and didn't see Quackmore next to her. She thought that he had already gone to work for the day. She had the day off to spend some time with Blaire. She got up and went to Blaire's room. Blaire was still asleep. She decided to make breakfast for Blaire, Matilda, and herself. It was still pretty early in the morning but Blaire would wake up soon nonetheless. She had to get breakfast on the table before Blaire woke up wanting breakfast.
Matilda came downstairs with Blaire soon enough. Hortense had breakfast ready just in time. Matilda put Blaire down and Blaire ran over to her mother. "Mommy, mommy," Blaire said. "Hey baby girl, good morning," Hortense said. "I'm hungry, mommy," Blaire said. "I got your breakfast right here," Hortense said, holding up a plate for Blaire. Blaire went and sat down at the table and Hortense placed the plate down in front of Blaire and handed her a full sippy cup.
That afternoon while Blaire was taking a nap after lunch, Hortense had a chance to talk to Matilda about taking a break from trying to have another baby. Blaire didn't want to go down for a nap. Blaire was crying every time Hortense put her down in the crib for her nap. Blaire was cranky and tired. Blaire eventually fell asleep after fifteen full minutes of screaming and crying.
"Quackmore and I decided to take a break from trying to have another baby. Our efforts just aren't working anymore," Hortense said. "I thought you two wanted another child," Matilda said. "We do want another child but we're going to take a break for right now," Hortense said. "I'm sure you two will eventually have another baby," Matilda said. "You really think so?" Hortense said. "Yeah, I really think so and I'm not just saying that to you," Matilda said.
Quackmore came home that night. Something hit his right leg. He looked down and saw Blaire hugging his leg. He put his stuff down and picked her up. "Hey princess, what are you doing? It's getting close to your bedtime," he said. "Daddy, daddy," Blaire said. She curled up to her father's chest while yawning. He went over to the couch to his half asleep wife. "Hey," she said. "Hi, can you put Blaire to bed please?" she said. "Sure," he said and went to put Blaire to bed for the night. He sat down in the rocking chair in her room until she was asleep. He loved to be with his daughter. He wanted to have more little babies but Blaire and Hortense were enough.
Hortense and Quackmore talked to Blaire about her not getting a little baby sibling. They told her before they put her to bed. Hortense started to cry about it but she was able to smile through her tears at her daughter. She was happy to have at least one little baby right now. They also wanted to take care of Blaire right now anyway. She was their whole world right now.
