33. the solution

When your eyes opened, you felt many things at the same time. Getting used to the bright light, you first felt the aching pain on your forehead and the cold of the blood. Then, the restrains on your hands and the bed you were laying on.

You slowly lifted your head up, looking around you. You spotted Teresa sitting on a chair in front of her desk, looking in a microscope. 

"Teresa," you called and her head snapped to you 

"Hey," she said as she got up "How do you feel?" 

"Why am I restrained?" you asked, ignoring her question.

"In case you would escape," 

"If I decided to cooperate with you, I'm not leaving until we found a cure. Earlier, you told to Thomas that the cure won't work on Newt. Why?" 

She sat on a chair next to the bed "When Brenda got the bite, she got Thomas' blood in her serum. Since then, she didn't get any new signs of being infected. However, when we gave a dose of the serum to a patient, it worked only for a couple of days," she paused and waited for you to register.

"There's something in Thomas' blood that I can't explain. It's different. Earlier, when I worked on everyone's neck, no need to hide it anymore, I managed to take three of the tissues soaked in blood. Thomas's, Gally's, and yours" 

"And what did it give?" you asked 

"Gally's blood is normal and I still need to test yours and Thomas," 

"Go ahead then," you said and she got up, walking back toward the desk.

"When did you know?" you asked after a minute.

She slightly lifted her head but didn't look at you
"When I got here, when they gave all my memories back,"

You looked down, many thoughts going in your head. You still wasn't believing that during all this time, you and her were the same family. If you knew sooner, you thought, maybe it could have been different.

"How was he? Our dad?"

"From what I remember, he was the greatest man in the world, he was like our hero when we were younger," she said and turned to you "You and he always had a better bond. I was more close to mom than you were. The day they found us, mom wasn't here anymore. She had turned into one of these creatures and died a few months before we got into Wicked. Dad came with us when we did. He wanted to cooperate. We grew up in here and never once doubted of their capacities and ideas. Until dad decided to leave. They killed him before he could go too far,"

She stopped and you nodded at her, listening to how she talked about them. It's like she knew them. Because you didn't remember and she did, she could know how they were physically, how they talked, laughed, sounded. 

Your thoughts were cut when you heard Teresa sucked in a breath.

"What is it?"

She turned to you and went to undo your restrains. You walked with her toward the microscope and looked in it as she gestured at you to do it.

"What does that mean?" you asked as you watched.

"It's not just slowing the virus down, it's killing it," Teresa explained and you turned to her.

"Who's blood is this?"

"It's yours"

You straightened up, almost agap at the news "So you mean that my blood can save people from this virus,"

She nodded quickly "We'll need more of it. Now I'm pretty sure that Thomas is the same as you,"

You watched as she went to examine Thomas's blood. She looked in the microscope before you saw her smile.

"You both can create the cure," she confirmed as she looked up.

You frowned but a feeling of relief invaded you. Finally, you had a way of ending all of this.

Suddenly, the building started to shake as an explosion went off somewhere in the city. You both turned around and saw it was the doors of the city.

A blaring alarm was heard as every doctor started to rush out of their labs. A woman voice was heard in the whole building.

This is a mandatory evacuation, please go to the roof.

You turned to Teresa
"We don't have much time so here's how this is gonna go. You help me making a cure for Newt and when it's done I'll help you with the rest,"

Teresa seemed to think for a moment but nodded, knowing she couldn't argue with you when it came to Newt.

"We need to tell Thomas," she said

You and Teresa walked toward a command room, passing by multiple people running the other way.

Once you found one, you entered and Teresa pointed to a microphone. You nodded at her and sat down before pressing the little black button that would make the whole city hear you.
