Chapter: 1
Paris, France
July 1789
Madeline's POV:
The sun had washed down upon Paris, France. A bustling city with many shops on each corner, and it only gets fancier when people reach the rich section of Paris. It does have beauty in it. If only they could learn how to take care of their poor section of the city, then again, where would the fun be in that? That's where the best parties were held. Sadly, war has ravaged bits and pieces of the once beautiful great city. Some of it was still under construction, but the war wasn't made yet. It was far from being over with.
People were restless as I was watching the mayhem unfold right before my eyes. The citizens were rioting all through the neighborhoods. The cries of the troubled souls demanded change, but everyone knows it will get worse. There were even gunshots here and there. Fights broke out between extremists and regular people. Sometimes, it was a scuffle between the blue guards and the people. It never fails that everyone is upset with how things were. It was dreadful to watch as I turned around and slipped into the Templar's hideout.
The noise of riots faded away from my ears as the door fell shut behind me. There was smaller chattering coming from inside as I made my way down the hallway. It wasn't long before I was spotted by a man who went by the name of Thomas Whitmore. He came down from London, England, and he was the most annoying man I have ever met in my life. He was here with Charles Sivert-the old man. He was advising him on some things from London. Connections.
He spoke in an English accent, "Mon cher ami (My dear friend), where have you been? You have been missed."
With a roll of my green eyes, "I have been doing my job. What have you been doing? Slacking off?"
"Feisty today, aren't we, huh?" He grins at me, and this man couldn't take a hit at all.
"Would you leave her alone already?" A beautiful male with a mop of light brown hair that looked like it had gold streaks in it, but we all know that it was the shades of his locks. Alexandre came in with a folder in his hand and Charles Sivert next to his side.
That made Thomas freezes a little bit as Sivert gave him a sharp look, "We have a business to get to. Come along, or you will be left behind."
Thomas nodded, "Of course, monsieur."
Charles Sivert gave me a sharp look as if it was my fault for the man's attention span. I grind my teeth together before he walks off with him, and Alexandre closes the distance between us. He gave a soft grin as he was more of a level-headed male in the sea of ambitious men, "He has it out for you, hm?"
"I don't know why. I haven't done anything." I shrugged my shoulders while walking down the hallway, and Alexandre fell into step with me. His light-colored eyes found mine as he gave me another soft smile.
"Well, obviously, you have done something." He teased me.
I couldn't help the smile that bloomed across my lips and only shrugged my shoulders again before asking him, "Any luck in your search or whatever you're doing?"
He sighs heavily, "I honestly don't know why we have to converse with the rats if you know what I mean?"
I did know what he meant by that. The rats were La Touche and Roi Des Thunes. Otherwise known as The King of Beggars and had a hideout in the underground sewers. I didn't know how a man like him could do that, but everyone knows he was a rat that scurries underground when the heat becomes too great above. After all, it was confirmed later that I learn that they had announced that Elise De La Serre was a traitor to the order and that Roi des Thunes and Sivert were actually behind Francois De La Serre's death.
