Cheryl came up beside you, touching your arm and causing you to turn away from your locker. You took a breath in, smelling her perfume and shampoo, mixing perfectly in the air. Her hand stayed on your arm even after she had your attention.
"I forgot I have river vixen practice today after school, but if you don't mind waiting I could give you a ride home?" She offered.
Since the school cut funding in 8th grade and fired your aide Cheryl had been your closest friend. Though you had a dog with you at all times there were some things that required a more human hand to help with. Cheryl's other friends had been surprised when she'd taken you under her wing and at first thought that maybe it was some elaborate trick. To be honest, so did you.
You had lived in Riverdale your whole life and no one went to school there without hearing about the reputation Cheryl Blossom had made for herself. So you were hesitant to accept her help and her friendship. But as time went on it became clear that she had no ill intentions. Aside from Cheryl you mostly kept to yourself, but the summer had brought someone new into your life and you found yourself making room for more than just one friend.
Veronica Lodge lived in the same building as you and had ungracefully bumped into you her first night here, when she made a rather insensitive remark about blindness and then realized her faux paux.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean...what I meant was."
"It's okay. You're not the first person I've bumped into in my life." You laughed. She'd walked right into you and then asked if you were blind...not out of politeness.
"Still, I'm honestly so sorry. Would you like to come up? Pop threw some extra food in, I'd love to share." She said and then added, "I just held the bag up." With a laugh.
"Sure, smells good. I like your perfume by the way, is it Marc Jacobs?"
"Daisy dream! How'd you know?" She asked, looping her arm with yours and leading you to the stairs.
"I have a very sensitive nose," you teased, tapping your nose with your finger.
"That's like a super power, or are you messing with me?"
"I'm only joking, I have the same one." You replied.
And so the end of your summer was capped off by an unlikely friendship with the new girl. It was something that hadn't come up in conversation yet with Cheryl. You weren't sure how to break the news to her that you were hanging out with someone new, especially when that someone new was going to be giving you the ride home that Cheryl just offered. Or, Veronica's mom had a guy who was giving you a ride home.
It was now or never though.
"I actually, have a ride." You admitted, "uh, Veronica and I are going home together. We live in the same building actually and-"
"Oh. Well, I have practice then." Cheryl announced, turning on her heel. Some of her long red hair brushed your arm as she walked away and you stood in the hallway, listening to her footsteps.
You knew you had hurt her feelings when, the next day at school, Cheryl wouldn't even speak to you. Usually she was the first one to seek you out. She would plop down beside you and dish on everything that had happened between the previous night's phone conversation and the bell ringing for lunch period. That was the first 'class' of the day that you shared together and you always looked forward to her presence. But she hadn't ever called last night and when you tried to get through it went to voicemail. Then today you smelled her perfume and heard the click of heels that you guessed were hers but she walked right passed you. Veronica offered to sit with you and you agreed, needing a friend to vent to.
"Try-outs are today for cheerleading, maybe you could hang around and talk to her after?" Veronica offered the best advice she could come up with, knowing you were hurting.
"I will, I need to talk to her. I didn't mean to hurt her feelings. I didn't know she'd react like this." You replied.
"Honey, I haven't even known Cheryl this long and I knew she'd react like this. Come on, someone moving in on you. That'd be like...well I have a feeling Cheryl has got as big a crush on you as the one Betty is sporting for Archie."
You played with a loose string on your sweater as you fought off a smile, "you think so?"
"I have a six sense about these things. Why? Do you feel the same way?" She asked.
"Well, yeah...I just never thought there was any chance for us." You replied, "Cheryl is amazing and beautiful and I don't measure up to that."
"Yes you do. And she wouldn't have flown off the handle like that if she didn't think so too. Go talk to her. I don't know Cheryl too well but she doesn't exactly seem like the 'realize-I-made-a-mistake-apologize' type." Veronica teased.
You took Veronica's advice and waited outside the cheer practice for Cheryl to be done. You weren't sure if she would speak to you or if she was still angry. When someone sat down on the bench beside you though you recognized Cheryl's familiar perfume.
"Cheryl I-"
"Listen-"
Both you and Cheryl began to speak at once and she laughed a little, shaking her head at you.
"Listen, I'm sorry about freaking out on you, I don't know what got into me. It's just...if I'm being honest with you, I was jealous thinking about you and Veronica. You're my best friend but you're more than that too. I really like you and I want you to be my girlfriend. I don't want to compete with Veronica or anyone for your attention." Cheryl admitted.
"Veronica is my friend but nothing more than that. I like you too and I have for a while I was just afraid that you wouldn't go for someone like me. I mean you're Cheryl Blossom. Beautiful, smart, a little scary. But I like you so much and I could never feel that way about someone else. No one else makes me feel like you do."
You felt Cheryl's hands on your cheeks, turning your face just as she leaned in and pressed her lips to yours. You couldn't fight the smile as you kissed her back. Veronica was right, she did have a sixth sense about these kinds of things.
