I strolled into world history with my head held high. Aspen sat at the far end of the classroom. When he saw me, he perked up a bit, hoping I'd sit by him. When I didn't, he slumped back into his chair, discouraged. I sighed and read my book with Eve, who was whispering to me.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" I shrugged,
"No, I'm not sure, but I'm pissed off and revenge sounds pretty damn good right now." She nodded and passed a note to the girl behind her.
"Pass it on."
"To who?" She whispered. Eve gestured and returned to the book. Aspen frowned, but kept reading his book. My hands formed into balls as I thought of the two of them together. The way she'd snicker at me, the thought of why he didn't tell me. I exhaled and worked on the sheet. The lunch bell rang, and Eve patted my back.
"We'll make sure he doesn't do anything, ok?"
"Ok," I nodded, my heart swollen. I put my morning books away and made my way outside behind the school. I sat on a bench that faced the football field and waited. It was about three minutes before a confused Danny walked around the corner. When he saw me, he held up the paper and asked,
"Was this you?"
"Yeah, it was." I replied, crossing my arms. He smirked wickedly and looked me over.
"What changed your mind?"
"Well, I thought about what you said, and decided its only fair that I go on at least one date with you."
"Ok, how about tonight, picnic at Crowbridge park?"
"I'll be there," I replied, sighing. His eyes darkened and he disappeared back around the corner. After about five minutes had passed, I decided it'd be safe to go back in, but when I walked around the corner, a hand of steel gripped my arm and pulled me aside. I was going to scream, but a hand cut me off and shushed me.
"SHH, it's just me!" He whispered.
"Aspen, let go of me!"
"Trish, I swear to dear Jesus it was only that once. I meant everything I said to you, and I still do." He looked at me with sad, pleading eyes. It made my heart ach, but I looked at him and said,
"I'm going out tonight, I still need time to thi..." But I was cut off by his lips. He cupped my face in his hands and pulled me in closer. I closed my eyes and my arms rested on his chest. After a minute or two, he pulled away and leaned his forehead on mine.
"I had to do that." Then he added,"I understand that you need space, but I still love you." Then he walked off, leaving me in utter confusion. I felt my lips where he'd kissed me. Did he just say he loves me?!? My body was still paralyzed when Eve appeared in the hallway.
"So how'd it go?"
"It was...interesting," I replied, staring off. She rolled her eyes and pushed me off to class.{later that night...}
I twirled as I looked at myself in the mirror. Eve had borrowed me a purple dress that had one strap going across my chest. It flowed at the bottom and had sparkles all over. She set my hair in a neat ponytail and I slipped on my flats.
"How do I look?" I asked. She smirked and nodded,
"Well enough to make Aspen jealous," then she paused and asked, "what did he say to you earlier?" I stared at myself in the mirror, looking down to my feet.
"He..told me..." I trailed off.
"Told you what?" She asked, confused. I shook my head and turned to her.
"Nothing. You ready to drive me?" She nodded and we drove off to the park. I had her drop me off about a block away. I didn't want Danny thinking anybody was watching, because no one was. The whole walk over, my hands were dancing together. I had absolutely no exit strategy if Danny decided to go all 'Jack the ripper' on me.
I stopped under a street light that was in the middle of the park. The only noise I heard was a cricket. At about 8:45, Danny walked up to me, dressed in nice jeans and a black dress shirt. His light brown hair was a little messy, but it matched his outfit alright. He approached me with a smile.
"Hey Trish."
"Hey Danny," I said, giving a little wave. He tentavly took my hand in his and led me to a little clearing. No one was out in the streets, and the park was completely abandoned. A checkered blanket was set out with a wicker basket filled with food. A few candles lit the area, but that was it. I sat down, my legs one on top of the other. He sat down facing me and smirked.
"You look awesome."
"Thanks. What're we eating?"
"Sandwiches."
"Ahh, very romantic," I sighed, being sarcastic. He crossed his arms and smiled,
"Not just any sandwiches, jimmy johns."
"Oh my god, you must be kidding," I said, still sarcastic. I don't care what anyone else says, I hate jimmy johns with everything in my being. It sucks terribly. He handed me one and I ate it while he talked about the football seasons for the past couple years, snore. After about ten minutes, he looked at me,
"Well, enough about me, what about you?"
"What about me?"
"Well...what happened to that phsyco yuppie dude your were with?" I sat up, feeling defensive.
"Phsyco yuppie?"
"Yeah, that pretty boy." I felt my muscles tense as I thought of how he talked about Aspen.
"His name is Aspen."
"Yeah, ok, whatever. What happened to him?"
"We're having...problems."
"What kind of problems?" He asked, smiling still. I felt a few tears sting my eyes.
"Problems."
"So your not together anymore?"
"I don't know," I stated, frowning. He smirked even wider now.
"So he's not here?" I sat up, suddenly alert.
"Nnnnooooo?" I stated, dragging the word out. He nodded.
"Good," then, everything happened very quickly. The candles, our only source of light, were blown out, illuminating us in darkness. The next thing I felt was being shoved down onto the ground. The only thing I could see was a few stars above the tree branches. Then, Danny pressed his lips against mine and pulled the pony tail out of my hair. I squirmed and punched and kicked, but my body was no match for his football build. One hand clenched my hair and the other ripped off my dress.
"I've waited so long," he grunted as he felt my body. He unbuckled his belt and started pulling down my underwear. And, just when all seemed over for me, a wire whipped around Danny's neck and he was pulled off me. My first instinct was to pull my underwear back on and cover up. The only suitable thing was the picnic blanket, so I rolled it around myself. I'd have some explaining to do once I was home.
I turned around to see Aspen straddled over Danny wearing a ski mask. He was punching Danny continuously in the face. Danny was squirming, but his face eventually started to bleed. After Aspen was tired with his face, he picked up a baseball bat and hit him in the lower back. The kidneys, so he'd piss blood for a few months. Once done with that, he sat backwards on Danny's hips, so his back was towards Danny. He held Danny's upper right leg between his legs and pulled the lower part sharply towards him, creating a loud SNAP. He did the same to his other leg and stood up, picking me up and running me to his car. Once I was buckled in, he drove off, surely breaking the speed limit. He ripped off the ski mask and breathed. I sat there, awed. I found my voice and yelled,
"WHAT THE FUCK?!?" He looked at me and said,
"I protected you."
"THAT WAS UNNESSISARY!" I yelled, still unable to process the information. He slammed on the breaks and pulled to the side of the road.
"Trish, I love you." That made me stop. True, he'd said the words earlier, but this time, giving the situation, I was more stunned.
"Huh?"
"I love you, I'd do absolutely anything for you. Brittany is a cunt-whore. I have had nothing to do with her since that night, I swear on my life Trish." He stared at me, catching his breath. I opened my mouth, then closed it.
"I'd understand if your still mad at me..." He stated softly. I blinked a couple times, smiled softly, and lifted his chin with my hand.
"Look at my face, Aspen. I'm not mad." He smiled and leaned across the seat, kissing me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him in close. He hugged my waist, almost pulling the blanket off. I giggled and pushed him away so I could get situated. He sat back in his seat, smiling widely.
"Does this mean we're ok?" He asked. I smiled and nodded,
"We're more than ok." He laughed and we drove to his house. The radio played, 'Why you gotta be so rude.'
"This song is going to kill me!" I complained. He agreed and we drove to his house. No other cars were in the drive way, so I gestured and looked a question at him.
"It's just us here. You can borrow some of Rae's clothes," he stated, looking at me in the blanket. The blanket cut off at my knees, and you could still see some cleavage. I blushed and ran upstairs to her room.
Rae had a lot of really cute clothes, but I was in the mood for something comfy, so I threw on some PJ pants with cats all over them and a purple tank top. Venom sat in his tank, staring into nothing. I smirked and went to their freezer. I opened it and searched for food for him. Aspen stood behind me, hands in his pockets.
"Whatcha doin?"
"I wanna feed venom," I stated. He nodded and pointed to a door.
"There's some in the basement."
"I didn't know you had a basement!" I exclaimed, turning to the door. He laughed and took my hand, leading me to the door.
"Here, I'll show you where we keep his food." He flipped a light switch and we walked down the wooden stairs. The floor was cement and a lightbulb hung from the ceiling.
"Your not gonna murder me or anything, right?"
"No!" He laughed, walking ahead of me to a large freezer. There was a pile of clothes in two baskets sitting by their washer and dyer. Aspen saw them and groaned,
"Shit, it's my turn to fold."
"I'll help you once I feed venom, take those into the living room, I'll meet you there." I took the box of frozen mice and read the directions;
Place mouse on Tupperware container, heat in microwave two minutes per mouse, then set seven inches away from snake. I shrugged and dumped three mice onto a plate. They were dead and hairless. I set them into the microwave and did as instructed, then I took them up to venoms tank. I set one on a fake tree branch, one in a corner, and one in front of venom. His tongue slithered for a moment, but he struck the mouse and ate the other two in a matter of seconds. I sighed and shut the tank, leaving venom alone. I walked to the living room and saw Aspen watching some older TV show, folding clothes. I frowned and sat at the couch, grabbing a pile of clothes.
"What is this?"
"The ghost whisperer." I perked up and squealed,
"I love this show!!!" He laughed and turned it up a little. This episode was about a boy who got hit by a lawn mower and was trying to get Melinda's help, as always. We folded clothes for about three episodes, then, I felt a little abnormal. I shot up quickly and asked,
"What day is it?"
"Tuesday?"
"No, of the month?" He stopped and thought for a a moment,
"17th? I think?" I got up and ran to the bathroom. Luckily, Rae's pants weren't ruined, but I couldn't find any pads or tampons. I sat on the toilet, head in my hands. A knock came to the door. I used a wad of toilet paper and stood up. When I flung the door open, Aspen stood there, holding a maxi pad.
"Looking for this?" I sighed, took it, and ran to the toilet. After I'd freshened up, I opened the door and sighed.
"Thanks."
"No problem, but we're out of other ones, so we gotta go get some."
"Uh, ok," I agreed, throwing on my coat and sitting in the car. Once we started off, Aspen asked,
"So, what're we looking for? Maxi, regular, wings, no wings?" I frowned and looked at him.
"How do you know so much about pads?" He smirked and looked at me.
"I have a mom and a big sister. I've heard about it since I was 8 years old." He pulled up to Walmart and we got out of the car. Once we were inside, I looked at him,
"Um, I understand if you'd rather not come with me."
"Ok, mom asked me to pick up some milk, I'll meet you at the registers?"
"Ok," I nodded and walked off to the section. After I grabbed the biggest pack I could find, I got the sudden craving for a chocolate fruit smoothie. Some girls like chocolate, some crave chips. Me, I need chocolate fruit smoothies to survive on my period. I ran to the fruit section and grabbed a pack of strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and blackberries. Once done with that, I grabbed a huge thing of assorted chocolate and met Aspen at the check out lines. He stared at me and laughed,
"What is this?"
"It's perfection, is what it is!" We checked out our stuff and drove back to his house. He helped me pick out the best chocolate for my smoothie.
"Hmm, almond joy or Reese's?"
"Reese's." I pointed at it.
"Hershey's or Heath?"
"Heath!" I exclaimed. He shook his head and smiled. While he mixed it up for me, I got a call from Eve.
"Hey, sup?"
"Where the hell are you?!?" She asked, concerned. I smirked and giggled.
"Aspen's house." There was a pause on the other end, followed by;
"Did you guys make up?"
"Yeah."
"What happened to Danny?" I explained the whole story to her, leaving out a couple obvious details. After I finished, she sighed and said,
"You excited for valentines day in three weeks?"
"Yes, I am!" I snickered, smiling widely. She laughed and said,
"Anything else I need to know about the failed date?"
"Well....about your dress." I started.__________________________________________________________________________________
