Rae had fallen asleep in her seat, but I was used to little sleep. I watched the twisting, turning road but my gaze occasionally flickered to the sleeping girl. It was strange; with her glorious pink covered by makeup she looked human. I couldn't help but wonder what I would do with Rae. One thing was certain; I had to leave her. She would not be able to adapt to the life of a Daemn hunter; she was too soft. She would be but a child soldier, destroyed in mere seconds by a blood thirsty demon. No matter what she said, no matter that she did not fear death; I couldn't do that to her. I, Ivy Tiensee, the ice cold killer, know by my peers as the woman with a blade in the place of a heart, would not let her die. Rae was like a little sister to me, a child from my heart. Even if she was my age; if just a few months younger. And, for the sake of sisterly love, I had to leave her behind. She would be enraged, that I knew, but she would hopefully understand that I am just trying to protect her. Even if it left me with the pain of guilt.
Guilt? My mind said to my heart, The great Ivy Tiensee, North America's greatest Daemn slayer, feels guilt? And for who? Just some child woman you met not even a week ago!
But my heart, idiot that it was, promptly ignored the logic my mind gave.
A few hours into the drive, Rae awoke yawning. "Where are we?"
"Three hours from Twinbrook."
She was surprised, her eyebrows shot up. "And you haven't passed a town?"
"No, we're passed a few, but I haven't stopped."
"Stop. Right now."
"Huh? Why?"
"Just stop." She told me, commanding. I did what she asked. "Get out. Now."
I got out of the car, as did she. She came and sat in the driver's seat. "Rae, what are you doing?" "
Driving, you needs some sleep."
"Rae!" I protested. "You're sixteen; you don't even have a license!"
"I'm a good driver and I have a G1. Anyways, you're just sixteen, so it doesn't matter who gets caught driving if we get pulled over."
Instead of answering, I simply whipped out a card from my pocket and showed it to her. "This license says you're eighteen!"
"It's a fake, dummy. But it's gotten by cops before."
"Well, I can drive legally with a licensed driver and this shows you are. So ha! Now get some sleep."
I rolled my eyes and got in the passenger's seat. "You're so immature."
"You're one to talk."
I simply laughed and closed my eyes; letting the car's movement lull me into sleep.
Ever closer. Ever closer. Come to us my dear. Come ever closer. Join us my dear. You are ever closer. Ever closer.
My eyes shot open as I tried to grasp the dream, a feeling of utmost importance resonating in my mind. Once again, it slipped through my fingers, mere butter in my grasp; but this time a drop was left behind.
Ever closer.
The voice shook me, haunted me, sent shills to my soul. I looked and noticed we were stopped and that Rae was shaking me. "Get down!" She hissed, and I immediately obeyed. I peeked out of the window and saw that we were in a town; parked on the side of the road. Walking by us were two girls. One was a brunette with a slightly chubby body; her small child-like hands had a different color painted on each nail. She had on a band tee and a pair of sweats, wore studs on her ears and had a birthmark on the middle of her nose. The other girl looked slightly gothic with her long purple coat that looked almost like a cape, her black bodysuit and her red gem belt. But, all in all, they seemed like normal teens bordering on adults. Perhaps seventeen?
"Who are they?" I whispered to Rae.
"Kai and Air. Strange, Air must have covered her mark. She usually has a star over her left eye."
"Air? Is she an Elementalist?"
"No, it's her nickname because it's her initials. Her real name's Ashley."
"Then what are their powers?" I asked, afraid of what they might be.
"Kai's an Empath and Air's a... they call her a Sensor."
"A Sensor?"
"Hush!" Rae said, shushing me as the two walked by. They were passing when Air blinked. She stopped, startled, and slowly blinked again; her green eyes flashing briefly to gray as they opened. Suddenly, to our extreme horror, Air whipped around and jumped onto our car. Before Rae could restart the car and drive away, Kai whipped a hammer out of her coat-cape and smashed the window.
"Run!" Rae yelled as we scrambled out of the car and began sprinting down the road. I could hear the two girls pounding footsteps chasing after us. But I was faster, stronger and had more endurance. I could easily outrun them and keep it up for a long time. We ran for over five minutes, I was barely broke a sweat as we maneuvered through the alleys. But I could hear heavy panting from beside me. I might be a great runner, but I went through loads of rigorous training to achieve this; Rae hasn't. She was tired and I could tell she had cramps by the way she clutched her stomach.
"Fuck this." I said, spinning around while ripping the cross from my bracelet. The two chasers, panting from effort, stopped at the sight of my glistening blade. I stood in front of Rae protectively, getting into a stance perfect for defense. "What do you want?" I said, challenging the other Hemis.
"To uphold the Hemi law! It is illegal to leave the protective boundaries of a Hemi school without permission."
"Screw that damned academy!" I yelled, causing everyone to jump. "I never wanted to join in the first place."
"It's the Hemi's law!"
"Well screw Hemi law, I'm leaving. And you can't stop me. Anyways, who sends children to act as police?"
A new voice chillingly spoke from behind us. "I do."
