the rain had begun to subdue by the time clay reached his house. the house on the very back of the street, his backyard turning into an endless array of trees.
there was one light in total on his entire street, a light at the beginning, so it had no use for being all the way in the back. he didn't mind, if fact, he'd rather have it so dark all the time.
clay leaned his skateboard against the wall of his house and he lightly made his way to the front door, opening it and successfully doing so with zero creaks. he stepped inside, sliding his shoes off and tiptoeing upstairs, skipping the stairs that made creaks as he stepped on them.
yes, he knew which were the silent and which were the loud. he spent about one to two nights testing each step and what pattern to take and now, he had it all memorized.
finally, clay made it to his door and he opened it just enough for him to squeeze through, and then he shut it again, locking it.
he was trying to make little to no sound so no one would wake up and find him still in his clothes, awake, not in bed.
not that they cared anyways. his parents really couldn't give a shit if he disappeared for a whole fucking week.
clay stripped off his clothes, throwing it aside and grabbing a pair of black sweatpants, slipping them on and falling back on his bed, phone above his face.
he stayed there for about an hour before he heard footsteps somewhere outside his bedroom.
frantically, he placed his phone on his nightstand and clicked off his lamp, freezing in place. whoever was out there couldn't even get into his room, it was locked. still, his heart thudded heavily in his chest and his breath had hitched.
there were a few more steps and then silence. clay realized that it was hid dad, judging by the weight put on each footstep. he also had learned who's footsteps were who's.
just in case.
sighing, clay just rolled onto his side, one hand pressed under his cheek and the other hanging over the edge of the bed. since he was already in bed and the lights were off, he decided to just to go sleep.
----
there wasn't much light entering his room when he woke up. the blinds were covering his one window, and they were thick. but once again, he didn't mind. the darker, the better.
on the nightstand, his phone buzzed and buzzed. groaning, he finally reached a hand towards it, grabbing it and bringing it back closer.
he opened the texts and read.
nick

7:26am
groaning, clay rolled out of bed, untangling his legs from the blanket. he hurried to the bathroom and scrubbed his face with water, fluffing up his hair and styling it so for most of the time, it stayed out of his bed.
he threw off his sweatpants and opened his closet, looking through.
he pulled out loose white pants, a loose black t-shirt, a belt, and a few chains because why the fuck not.
after he put that all on, he slipped on some socks and squatted down to his pile of clothes from yesterday. he reached into the pocket of his pants and grabbed the pack of cigarettes and lighter, slipping both of those into his pocket.
buzz!
he looked at his phone.
nick
we're here, hurry ur ass
up
7:35am
clay didn't answer and instead slid his phone into his opposite pocket and hurried downstairs. he slid on his shoes, glad that no one else was down here and opened the front door.
and there nick and punz were.
he greeted them with a bit of mock-enthusiastic words and smiles and stepped onto his skateboard, pushing against the pavement and riding alongside them.
nick, his best friend, had raven-black hair that was almost as long as clay's. he always wore a white bandana around his head, some strands of hair flicking over it.
today, nick wore a white t-shirt over a black hoodie. his pants were black and chains hung from them as well. he also had an array of piercings climbing up his ears.
punz, was his other friend. his name was actually luke, but he prefered punz, so that's what they called him.
he wore a black t-shirt and a white sweater over it, that had multiple graffiti-type designs all over it, and he wore white pants. he didn't have any piercings, but there were multiple chains hanging around his neck.
clay dug his hand into his pocket and made sure his fingers clenched over the pack of cigarettes, making sure they were here and not back at home, where his parents were.
cold metal clicked together, his rings. some were thick, some were thin, but there was at least one on every finger of each hand, either the color of silver or black.
he leaned sideways, turning in sync with punz and nick. the gas station was in sight and as they rolled up, clay stepped off smoothly, kicking up his skateboard and holding it under his arm.
nick opened the door for them and they stepped in.
the cool air of the gas station felt refreshing, but strangly thick. but, clay liked it either way.
he walked around and punz and nick went off find some cigs and maybe some weed.
he never truly liked the gas station during the day. because it always had another person in here. he couldn't just go around the back to smoke, people would always be watching. and the fucking self-conscious part of him hated that.
but during the night, especially 1 am, no one was at the gas station, only him and of course a damn cashier. but as soon as he got what he wanted, he could smoke anywhere around here and have nobody's eyes on him.
