I looked over at Ryan, shock covered his face.
He ran over to Jack's side and I followed after him.
A tree was crushing Jack's legs. It was ripped and mangled from the fence and a splinter of wood was stuck into his calf.
"Jack." Ryan croaked. I had a feeling that was all he could get out.
"Ry," Jack's face got whiter by the minute. "Am I going to die?"
Ryan grabbed his hand. "No. I won't let you die." I saw people around us look at each other with apprehensive faces.
He immediately started inspecting his legs. I sat behind his head and propped it up with the top of my thighs.
"Jack, wiggle your toes for me." He said calmly.
I watched as his feet stayed motionless. I bit the inside of my cheek, trying to stifle the tears.
"Are they moving?" Jack started to lift his head up but I stopped him.
Tears filled his eyes and he cursed under his breath.
"Jack, I'm going to have to amputate your legs."
"No. No please no-"
"It's either that or you bleed out."
Jack hesitated before he answered. "Just make the pain stop."
Ryan took a saw and hovered it over his leg.
"Ryan, you don't have to do it." I said.
"It has to be me." He brought the saw down and pierced his legs and a loud ripping sound of bone and flesh filled my ears. Jack yelled a blood curdling scream.
I closed my eyes and tried to rid the sounds and smells away.
His screaming finally stopped, but the sawing didn't.
I opened my eyes and saw tears streaming down Ryan's face. His muscles swelled beneath his shirt. I looked down, Jack's face was so pale I sware he was a ghost. Blood pooled around his abdomen. Ryan finally stopped sawing.
"We need to get him inside, quick." He commanded.
A few men lifted him up and Ryan was about to help when I stopped him.
"No, you have done enough. They can take it from here."
He wrapped his arms around me and cried softly into my small shoulder as they carried Jack inside.
"He is going to be ok." I felt like lies covered my tongue.
He finally calmed down after a few minutes and we walked back to his plane.
Jane saw him crying and tears filled her eyes too.
"Jack." I said.
She collapsed into sobs on the bed. "He isn't dead." I added.
She sat up and stopped crying. Ryan sat down on the edge of her bed.
"I'll leave you guys alone." I opened the door and walked into the humid air. Having a storm didn't change the heat.
I went back to my plane to see if my mom was ok. She was better than ok. Her and Michael were snuggled in a bed together. I could hear slurping noises from under the blanket.
"Just put a sign on the door or something." The noises stopped and I walked down the aisle to a compartment across from their bed to get clothes.
"Sorry. Didn't know you were back." My mother said airily.
