I took a nap before prom and woke up at 7:30, which is when I was supposed to be in the parking lot. I ran out and my dad wasn't home. I waited fourty minutes until he finally got there. I drove so fast I don't know how the cops didn't come after me, but I got there in ten minutes when it's a twenty minute drive. I spent another ten minutes hyping myself up and then convincing the kids at the door to let me in when I forgot my ticket. I walked in and Betty's favorite song had just started playing.
"God, I hate crowds." I mumbled to myself. I looked for her and she was over on the far side of the gym. Betty's dancing with him. With Steven, slow dancing. Her head cuddled up into his shoulder. I knew it, I knew there was always something up with those two. I'm not even going to go over there, they can do whatever they want with each other. I don't like dancing anyway, I'm just going home.
I was walking home on the broken cobblestone pavement trying to figure out what I was going to say when I saw Betty at school on Monday. I left my dad's car in the parking lot, I know he'll be mad but I'll go back for it tomorrow. Avoiding texts and calls is one thing, but she'll demand I talk to her at school.
I got to a stop sign when the girl from the store, Augustine, pulled up beside me.
"James, get in, let's drive." She said. I didn't say anything, I just listened. She was like a figment of my worst intentions. I didn't want to cheat it was just a thought that crossed my mind when I walked out of the gym.
Finally I asked, "Where are we going? What were you doing by the school at 8pm?"
"I wasn't stalking you James, I just got off work. What were you doing walking away from the school without your girlfriend?" She asked, seeming concerned. "Oh and we're going to my new apartment. It's by the beach."
I stared at her for a minute, and laughed. "The beach is 30 minutes away but screw it. I'll sleep on your couch and you can bring me back to town tomorrow. I'm sorry I never texted you back when you asked how my first week went."
She gave a half smile and stayed silent. She looks so pretty with the moonlight shining through her window. Huh.
After about 25 minutes, she pulls into a driveway. "We're here."
We get out and she gives me a tour around. "This is my room, you can sleep in here tonight if you want. The couch is small, you saw it out there."
"I'm alright." I said, heading back out to the living room. "You have anything to drink?"
After another hour or so we were in her room drinking wine, and I explained everything with Betty. I moved from the floor to her bed and she hugged me while I cried.
All I could smell was the salt air of the ocean and Augustine's hair. Which smelled like strawberries. I pull out of the hug and our faces were inches apart. Before I know it, we're kissing. Before I can process we're kissing, we're under the covers and our clothes are off.
"Are you sure?" I ask, finally kind of realizing what's happening.
"Never have I ever before, but I think I'm ready." She says, smiling.
I lean back down and kiss her again.
