"October"

________

The tips ofmy fingers brushed over the worn surface of the kitchen table as Draco and I watched Luna take the last bite of bread with a smile plastered on her lips.

We all looked at each other in silence, aware of how exhausted we were. I leaned back on my chair, stretching out my arm to take the last sip of water from the glass we had shared. The kitchen was empty, and there was not much more left than a few plates and some forks and knives.

I tilted my head to look at Draco, just to notice how he was staring at the dirty window next to him. There were roses outside, brushing against the glass with each gust of wind. The sky was cloudy, but somehow it looked warm and gentle outside.

A set of white painted chairs caught my attention, there were four of them placed around a tiny white garden table. The legs of it were covered in moss- just like the rest of the house they looked lonely, but welcoming in a way.

"What are we gonna do now?", Luna gulped as she swallowed the last bite and pushed her plate away. Draco had his arms folded, biting the inside of his cheek as I couldn't tear my eyes off the lovely garden in front of me.

"We should go outside-", I looked at both of them for a second, letting out a soft chuckle, "We all could need some fresh air, don't you think?"

Luna's eyes snapped to the window Draco and I were looking at, and I noticed how the look in her eyes changed a little, "I used to spend a lot of time there when I was younger, picking flowers and reading books.", she mumbled in an airy tone, "Life was easier back then."

Draco and I both turned our head towards the blonde girl sitting next to us, noticing how she let her guard down for the first time. How she was able to admit that even to her, life would become heavy sometimes.

With a deafening scratch, I pushed my chair back over the dusty floor, "Let's go then."

I rolled up the black sleeves of the baggy shirt I was wearing before placing the dishes in the sink. When I opened the cabinet on the wall, I noticed old wine glasses on the top shelf. "Do we have wine or something?", Draco's eyes snapped to me as I stretched up on my toes to grab them,

and right when I noticed that I wasn't able to reach them, I felt something pressed against my spine, and saw how another hand grabbed them for me. When I turned around Draco was towering over me, with three of the glasses in one hand, and a bottle of red wine in the other.

A tiny smile climbed on our lips as Luna opened the door to the garden, urging us to step outside. I followed them into the long grass, letting my fingers brush against all kinds of flowers on the way.

When we reached the table, Draco placed the glasses and the bottle on it before pulling the chairs back for us to sit down.

"This is my favorite time of the year.", I stated as a lovely summer breeze tangled my hair, messing up Draco's as well, "June?", he questioned bluntly.

"Not particularly this month-", I chuckled as I brought the full glass of wine up to my lips, "It's the last couple of weeks before summer. Everything turns brighter, and I like how the nights are getting warmer-",

"Me too.", Luna cut me off softly, before she leaned down to pick a yellow tulip, "Lovely, isn't it?"

Draco sighed disapprovingly as he took a sip from his glass, "Nonsense."

Our eyes snapped back to him, and we patiently waited for him to say something. As he noticed our staring, he rolled his eyes and looked up, "I don't like summer. I just like when it ends."

"Oh, so you're more of a winter person?", Luna questioned patiently.

The first thing my gaze landed on were his eyes, and how they reflected the navy blue above him. I looked up as well, just to see how the sky had turned more colorful. The sun was about to set on this gentle evening, wrapping the world into a light shade of pink and orange.

The clouds were barely moving- it was completely still. For a brief moment, I felt like the world stopped turning for us to embrace it.

"Autumn. I like how it all falls apart, the chaos about it.", he added in a low tone. Luna's eyes widened, and she looked worried for a second, but I figured that it made sense.

Somewhere in him, or in his soul, he was falling apart as well. He gave off the same kind of chaos- the feeling you get when the air turns colder, when the sky is tinted in a heavy grey,

Draco felt like October.

"But whatever.", he shrugged his shoulders, and my gaze shifted to the sky again. We didn't speak much, because we all had not much to say.

We sat there in a comfortable silence, watching as the sun disappeared behind some trees in the distance. Luna started telling stories about the memories she had created there, how her mother used to bake the bread she made for us, and how her father picked those lovely flowers and tucked it into her hair.

She told a lot about her parents and how they made this place a home. I let my eyes wander, observing every datail around the house and the garden, picturing the stories she was telling.

I could imagine just how nicely it must have looked when they were still here, and how this loving home had turned Luna into the pure soul she lived to be. It came to my mind that she treated others in a way her parents used to treat her,

and that Draco was most likely doing the same thing.

As she continued speaking, I noticed how sometimes, he smiled a little, and how he tried to keep himself from doing so.

I still had so many questions about all of this, and how they got me here. I needed to know why all of this happened, and I needed to hear it from Draco.

But I decided to wait. We were too tired, and I wanted this moment to stay a little longer. I knew they would tell me soon, and that it didn't have to be now. We were already on our third glass of wine, embracing the darkness we were surrounded with.

We were safe here- so we allowed ourselves to live for a while. To get drunk on wine and the stars while telling each other about memories and dreams. And for the first time in a while, I felt a sense of belonging.

We filled this peaceful night with meaningful words and warm laughs, as three strangers that somewhat began to feel like home.
